Expressing a Random Variable in Terms of Uniform Random Variables
This note suggests that expressing a distribution function as a mixture of suitably chosen distribution functions leads to improved methods for generating random variables in a computer. The idea is to choose a distribution function which is close to the original and use it most of the time, applying the correction only infrequently.

A CLT for Information-theoretic statistics of Gram random matrices with a given variance profile [PDF]
Consider a $N\times n$ random matrix $Y_n=(Y_{ij}^{n})$ where the entries are given by $$ Y_{ij}^{n}=\frac{\sigma_{ij}(n)}{\sqrt{n}} X_{ij}^{n} $$ the $X_{ij}^{n}$ being centered, independent and identically distributed random variables with unit ...

Conditional variable importance for random forests
Background Random forests are becoming increasingly popular in many scientific fields because they can cope with "small n large p" problems, complex interactions and even highly correlated predictor variables.

Effective Positioning in Cutting Area of a Harvester Using Computer Modelling
An improvement of methods and models for preliminary estimation of the performance of harvesters in timber production intends to support better justification of the use of certain harvester types and technologies for specific natural and production ...

A probabilistic representation of constants in Kesten's renewal theorem [PDF]
The aims of this paper are twofold. Firstly, we derive some probabilistic representation for the constant which appears in the one-dimensional case of Kesten's renewal theorem. Secondly, we estimate the tail of some related random variable which plays an

Working with statistical data from real contexts has become fundamental in school-level statistics, because it enables the development of statistical reasoning. In this regard, the notion of the random variable is fundamental to statistical data analysis.

A generalization of the Ricets distribution
In this paper we generalize the Rice's random variable. We calculate the m-th moment, the distribution function, the characteristic function, the mode and the distribution of the products of Rice's -(a, a, v) random variables.

One Concave-Convex Inequality and Its Consequences
Our starting point is an integral inequality that involves convex, concave and monotonically increasing functions. We provide some interpretations of the inequality, in terms of both probability and terms of linear functionals, from which we further ...

Detecting Directed Interactions of Networks by Random Variable Resetting
We propose a novel method of detecting directed interactions of a general dynamic network from measured data. By repeating random state variable resetting of a target node and appropriately averaging over the measurable data, the pairwise coupling ...
