Random Variables Aren’t Random

open access: yesMathematics
This paper examines the foundational concept of random variables in probability theory and statistical inference, demonstrating that their mathematical definition requires no reference to randomization or hypothetical repeated sampling. We show how measure-theoretic probability provides a framework for modeling populations through distributions ...

On the Sojourn Time of the Brownian Process in a Multidimensional Sphere

open access: yesNonlinear Analysis, 2009
We consider the Brownian motion process B m(s) in the m-space and the distribution F m(t, x, a) = P ˘ sup 0≤s≤t ˛ ˛B m(s) + x ˛ ˛ < a¯ , where a > 0, x ∈ R m, |x| < a.

Plecstatin inhibits hepatocellular carcinoma tumorigenesis and invasion through cytolinker plectin

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
The ruthenium‐based metallodrug plecstatin exerts its anticancer effect in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) primarily through selective targeting of plectin. By disrupting plectin‐mediated cytoskeletal organization, plecstatin inhibits anchorage‐dependent growth, cell polarization, and tumor cell dissemination.

Physical mechanisms and models of long-term transformations of radiative recombination in n-GaAs due to the magnetic field treatments

open access: yesSemiconductor Physics, Quantum Electronics & Optoelectronics, 2016
Simulation of long-time changes in photoluminescence of n-GaAs has been performed, and the mechanism of transformation of the defect structure caused by magnetic field treatments has been represented.

Infrared laser sampling of low volumes combined with shotgun lipidomics reveals lipid markers in palatine tonsil carcinoma

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Nanosecond infrared laser (NIRL) low‐volume sampling combined with shotgun lipidomics uncovers distinct lipidome alterations in oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC) of the palatine tonsil. Several lipid species consistently differentiate tumor from healthy tissue, highlighting their potential as diagnostic markers.

Colorectal cancer‐derived FGF19 is a metabolically active serum biomarker that exerts enteroendocrine effects on mouse liver

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Meta‐transcriptome analysis identified FGF19 as a peptide enteroendocrine hormone associated with colorectal cancer prognosis. In vivo xenograft models showed release of FGF19 into the blood at levels that correlated with tumor volumes. Tumoral‐FGF19 altered murine liver metabolism through FGFR4, thereby reducing bile acid synthesis and increasing ...

Variability Measures of Positive Random Variables

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2011
During the stationary part of neuronal spiking response, the stimulus can be encoded in the firing rate, but also in the statistical structure of the interspike intervals. We propose and discuss two information-based measures of statistical dispersion of the interspike interval distribution, the entropy-based dispersion and Fisher information-based ...
