Rapid intensification of tropical cyclones in the Gulf of Mexico is more likely during marine heatwaves

open access: yesCommunications Earth & Environment
Tropical cyclones can rapidly intensify under favorable oceanic and atmospheric conditions. This phenomenon is complex and difficult to predict, making it a serious challenge for coastal communities.

A Triggering Mechanism for Rapid Intensification of Tropical Cyclones [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of the Atmospheric Sciences, 2015
Triggering processes for the rapidly intensifying phase of a tropical cyclone (TC) were investigated on the basis of numerical experiments using a three-dimensional nonhydrostatic model. The results revealed that the rapid intensification of the simulated TC commenced following the formation of a circular cloud, which occurred about 12 h after the TC ...

Organ‐specific redox imbalances in spinal muscular atrophy mice are partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotides

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We identified a systemic, progressive loss of protein S‐glutathionylation—detected by nonreducing western blotting—alongside dysregulation of glutathione‐cycle enzymes in both neuronal and peripheral tissues of Taiwanese SMA mice. These alterations were partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotide therapy, revealing persistent redox imbalance as ...

Sharp Increase in rapid intensification of Arabian Sea tropical cyclones over the past decade

open access: yesCommunications Earth & Environment
The Arabian Sea has experienced a sharp increase in extremely severe tropical cyclones over the past decade, yet the drivers behind this trend remain unclear.

Evolution of small-scale magnetic elements in the vicinity of granular-size swirl convective motions [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Advances in solar instrumentation have led to a widespread usage of time series to study the dynamics of solar features, specially at small spatial scales and at very fast cadences. Physical processes at such scales are determinant as building blocks for

Transferrin receptor 1‐mediated iron uptake supports thermogenic activation in human cervical‐derived adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this study, we found that human cervical‐derived adipocytes maintain intracellular iron level by regulating the expression of iron transport‐related proteins during adrenergic stimulation. Melanotransferrin is predicted to interact with transferrin receptor 1 based on in silico analysis.

Characteristics of the convective bursts and their relationship with the rapid intensification of Super Typhoon Maria (2018)

open access: yesAtmospheric and Oceanic Science Letters, 2020
For Super Typhoon Maria (2018), the multi-intensity change stages are identified and reproduced by numerical simulation. It is rather difficult to perform a perfect simulation for such a repeatedly reinforced typhoon during its long life-cycle and remote

Recent decrease in western North Pacific tropical cyclone rapid intensification during June

open access: yesAtmospheric Science Letters, 2022
This study investigates the long‐term tendency in the ratio of rapid intensification (RI) cases to the total number of tropical cyclone cases over the western North Pacific (WNP) during June between 1982 and 2021.

Intensification of tilted atmospheric vortices by asymmetric diabatic heating [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
P\"aschke et al. (JFM, 701, 137--170 (2012)) studied the nonlinear dynamics of strongly tilted vortices subject to asymmetric diabatic heating by asymptotic methods.

Tau acetylation at K331 has limited impact on tau pathology in vivo

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We mapped tau post‐translational modifications in humanized MAPT knock‐in mice and in amyloid‐bearing double knock‐in mice. Acetylation within the repeat domain, particularly around K331, showed modest increases under amyloid pathology. To test functional relevance, we generated MAPTK331Q knock‐in mice.
