Abstract figure legend Preglomerular pericyte‐like SMMHC+ vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) display marked endocrine plasticity. Hypotension caused by salt depletion and angiotensin‐converting enzyme (ACE) inhibition induces a reversible transformation of these VSMCs toward an endocrine state that produces renin.
