Ratcheting droplet pairs [PDF]

open access: yesChaos: An Interdisciplinary Journal of Nonlinear Science, 2018
Millimetric droplets may be levitated on the surface of a vibrating fluid bath. Eddi et al. [Europhys. Lett. 82, 44001 (2008)] demonstrated that when a pair of levitating drops of unequal size are placed nearby, they interact through their common wavefield in such a way as to self-propel through a ratcheting mechanism.

Confined Brownian ratchets [PDF]

open access: yesThe Journal of Chemical Physics, 2013
We analyze the dynamics of Brownian ratchets in a confined environment. The motion of the particles is described by a Fick-Jakobs kinetic equation in which the presence of boundaries is modeled by means of an entropic potential. The cases of a flashing ratchet, a two-state model, and a ratchet under the influence of a temperature gradient are analyzed ...

Ratcheting behavior of Eurofer97 at 550 °C

open access: yesNuclear Materials and Energy, 2018
The components in reactor are usually exposed to cyclic loading caused by frequent startups, shutdown and load fluctuations which lead to ratcheting effect.

Chaos in kicked ratchets [PDF]

open access: yesPhysical Review E, 2015
We present a minimal one-dimensional deterministic continuous dynamical system that exhibits chaotic behavior and complex transport properties. Our model is an overdamped rocking ratchet that is periodically kicked with a delta function potential. We develop an analytical approach that predicts many key features of the system, such as current reversals,

Ratcheting Behavior of Intervertebral Discs Under Cyclic Compression: Experiment and Prediction

open access: yesOrthopaedic Surgery, 2019
Objective To evaluate the ratcheting behavior of intervertebral discs (IVD) by experiments and theoretical study. Method The lumbar spines of sheep were obtained at a local slaughterhouse, and the IVD was processed with upper and lower vertebral bodies ...

Ratcheting occurrence conditions of piping under sinusoidal excitations

open access: yesMechanical Engineering Journal, 2020
Ratcheting is one of the dominant failure modes under excessive earthquakes and may cause extreme failures of structures (e.g., collapse). We focused on clarifying the ratcheting mechanism of piping under sinusoidal excitations.

A new crystal plasticity modeling of uniaxial ratcheting behavior for face-centered cubic 6061 aluminum alloy

open access: yesMaterials Research Express, 2020
The uniaxial ratcheting behavior of face-centered cubic 6061 aluminum alloy is investigated theoretically based on the crystal plasticity theory. In this model, a simplified flow rule is adopted for convenient engineering application, and the classical ...

Experimental and Numerical Evaluation of Residual Displacement and Ductility in Ratcheting and Shakedown of an Aluminum Beam

open access: yesApplied Sciences, 2020
Safety assessment of structures can be obtained employing limit design to overcome uncertainties concerning actual response due to inelastic constitutive behavior and more generally to non-linear structural response and loads’ random variability.

The numerical and experimental analysis of ratcheting behavior for 304 steel sheets under cyclic axial loading

open access: yesAdvances in Mechanical Engineering, 2023
The present study examines the effect of the thickness, cutouts numbers, and different cutouts shapes on the ratcheting behavior of 304 steel sheets under cyclic axial loading.

The Muller’s Ratchet and Aging

open access: yesTrends in Genetics, 2020
Aging entails an irreversible deceleration of physiological processes, altered metabolic activities, and a decline of the integrity of tissues, organs, and organ systems. The accumulation of alterations in the genetic and epigenetic spaces has been proposed as an explanation for aging.
