Special Section on Ratcheting [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Pressure Vessel Technology, 2015
The design methods for pressure vessels and piping are based on the avoidance of potential modes of failure, such as collapse, excessive deformation, and cracking. Collapse and excessive deformation from a single load application are addressed by methods such as buckling analysis, primary stress analysis, and plastic limit analysis. For instance, limit

Chemically Fueled Systems Chemistry Across Length Scales

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Chemically fueled reaction cycles regulate processes through single and multiple catalytic sites on the molecular and assembly scale. This gives rise to unique kinetically controlled properties/functions like spatio‐temporal catalysis, oscillations, optical properties, and perform work.

Implementing Demons and Ratchets [PDF]

open access: yesEntropy, 2017
Experimental results show that ratchets may be implemented in semiconductor and chemical systems, bypassing the second law and opening up huge gains in energy production. This paper summarizes or describes experiments and results on systems that effect demons and ratchets operating in chemical or electrical domains.

Bioinspired Adaptive Surfaces for Intelligent Liquid Manipulation: Progressing From Passive and Active to Hybrid Strategies

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
This review examines passive, active, and hybrid liquid manipulation strategies, highlighting hybrid approaches as an emerging route to reconcile energy efficiency with adaptive control. By actively reconstructing passive surfaces to store programmable interfacial energy, hybrid systems enable flexible yet low‐power liquid transport, with perspectives ...

Experimental and Numerical Analysis of Ratcheting Behavior of Super Duplex SAF2507 Stainless Steel Under Uniaxial Loading

open access: yesApplied Sciences
Super duplex SAF2507 stainless steel is widely used in petrochemical piping systems during the transport of substances. The pipelines are subjected to cyclic loads due to road vibration and internal pressure, which causes the ratcheting behavior. In this

Biomechanical investigation of a novel ratcheting arthrodesis nail

open access: yesJournal of Orthopaedic Surgery and Research, 2010
Background Knee or tibiotalocalcaneal arthrodesis is a salvage procedure, often with unacceptable rates of nonunion. Basic science of fracture healing suggests that compression across a fusion site may decrease nonunion.

Competition and the Ratchet Effect [PDF]

open access: yesSSRN Electronic Journal, 2008
In labor markets, the ratchet effect refers to a situation where workers subject to performance pay choose to restrict their output, because they rationally anticipate that firms will respond to higher output levels by raising output requirements or by cutting pay.

CRYOGENIC RATCHETING OF PRESTRAINED AUSTENITIC STAINLESS STEEL S30408

open access: yesJixie qiangdu, 2020
Taking advantage of the EUM-25 K20 tension-torsion fatigue testing machine by CARE,the cryogenic uniaxial ratcheting tests were carried out for the S30408 specimens with and without weld, and with 0%,8%,and 12% pre-strains at110 K.

Ratchet Cellular Automata [PDF]

open access: yesPhysical Review Letters, 2003
In this work we propose a ratchet effect which provides a general means of performing clocked logic operations on discrete particles, such as single electrons or vortices. The states are propagated through the device by the use of an applied AC drive. We numerically demonstrate that a complete logic architecture is realizable using this ratchet.
