Tests of evolutionary and genetic rescue using flour beetles, Tribolium castaneum, experimentally evolved to thermal conditions

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 14, Issue 5, May 2024.
We use experimental evolution to test the effects of demographic and evolutionary rescue in populations of Tribolium castaneum previously adapted to high temperature and kept at small population sizes. We find no evidence of rescue in these populations and discuss the results in the context of conservation intervention.

Genetic differences in the development of physical dependence on pentobarbital in four inbred strains of rats.

open access: yesJapanese Journal of Pharmacology, 1987
Fischer 344 (F344), Lewis (LEW), spontaneously hypertensive (SHR) and Wistar Kyoto (WKY) rats were chronically fed food containing pentobarbital on an escalating drug dosage schedule over a period of 47 days.

The origin, connectivity, and individual specialization of island wolves after deer extirpation

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 14, Issue 4, April 2024.
We applied DNA metabarcoding and SNP genotyping to quantify variation in marine foraging behavior within wolf packs, among sexes, and individuals using 957 scats collected from an island and the adjacent mainland from 2016 to 2022. Island wolves consistently consumed sea otters while mainland wolves fed mainly on ungulates and voles with more variation

Upregulation of Transglutaminase andε(γ-Glutamyl)-Lysine in the Fisher-Lewis Rat Model of Chronic Allograft Nephropathy [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Background. Tissue transglutaminase (TG2), a cross-linking enzyme, modulates deposition of extracellular matrix protein in renal fibrosis. This study aimed to examine TG2 and its cross-link product ε(γ-glutamyl)-lysine in the Fisher-Lewis rat renal ...

Limits to species distributions on tropical mountains shift from high temperature to competition as elevation increases

open access: yesEcological Monographs, Volume 94, Issue 1, February 2024.
Abstract Species turnover with elevation is a widespread phenomenon and provides valuable information on why and how ecological communities might reorganize as the climate warms. It is commonly assumed that species interactions are more likely to set warm range limits, while physiological tolerances determine cold range limits.

High-resolution genome screen for bone mineral density in heterogeneous stock rat [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
We previously demonstrated that skeletal mass, structure, and biomechanical properties vary considerably in heterogeneous stock (HS) rat strains. In addition, we observed strong heritability for several of these skeletal phenotypes in the HS rat model ...

Nervous system‐related tropism of SARS‐CoV‐2 and autoimmunity in COVID‐19 infection

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Immunology, Volume 54, Issue 1, January 2024.
This review summarizes the current knowledge regarding neurotropism and emerging immune responses in SARS‐CoV‐2 infection. There are direct and indirect effects on the nervous system by SARS‐CoV‐2 infection. Presently, vaccination against SARS‐CoV‐2 is the most effective way of preventing SARS‐CoV‐2 infection of the nervous system. Abstract The effects

Preformed lymphocytotoxic antibodies: The effects of class, titer and specificity on liver vs. heart allografts [PDF]

open access: yes, 1992
The effect on liver and heart allograft survival (ACI rats to Lewis rats) was studied after three methods of recipient presensitization and after different intervals between sensitization and transplantation.

Experimental Infection of Bundibugyo Virus in Domestic Swine Leads to Viral Shedding with Evidence of Intraspecies Transmission

open access: yesTransboundary and Emerging Diseases, Volume 2024, Issue 1, 2024.
The Ebolavirus genus contains several of the deadliest zoonotic viruses known. One of these, Bundibugyo virus (BDBV), has been the causative agent of two outbreaks of human disease that have resulted in 211 known cases with a case fatality rate of 33.6%.
