Study on chronic toxicity of rhubarb extract in Sprague-Dawley rats
Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the safety of rhubarb extract. Methods: SD rats were treated with rhubarb extract at 0, 101, 405 and 1620 mg/kg/day for 52 weeks. food consumption and body weights were recorded.

Improved timed-mating, non-invasive method using fewer unproven female rats with pregnancy validation via early body mass increases [PDF]
For studies requiring accurate conception-timing, reliable, efficient methods of detecting oestrus reduce time and costs, whilst improving welfare. Standard methods use vaginal cytology to stage cycle, and breeders are paired–up using approximately five ...

Dysfunctional play and dopamine physiology in the Fischer 344 rat
Juvenile Fischer 344 rats are known to be less playful than other inbred strains, although the neurobiological substrate(s) responsible for this phenotype is uncertain.

Splenic Hemangiosarcoma in a Young Sprague-Dawley Rat
The present report describes a rare case of spontaneous hemangiosarcoma in a nine-week-old male Sprague-Dawley rat. At necropsy, multiple white nodules of various sizes were observed on and within the enlarged spleen and liver and were histopathologically determined to be composed of spindle- to oval-shaped cells that showed invasive growth without ...

Spontaneous Iron Overload in Sprague-Dawley Rats [PDF]
In a review of the toxicological studies performed in our laboratory during the period 1986-1995, we occasionally observed significant iron overloading in the liver. Liver tissue was examined by light and electron microscopy, and the results were analyzed by sex and age (7, 9, 11, 19, 31, 59, and 111 wk).

PainSeeker: An Automated Method for Assessing Pain in Rats Through Facial Expressions [PDF]
In this letter, we aim to investigate whether laboratory rats' pain can be automatically assessed through their facial expressions. To this end, we began by presenting a publicly available dataset called RatsPain, consisting of 1,138 facial images captured from six rats that underwent an orthodontic treatment operation.

Radiative torques: Analytical Model and Basic Properties [PDF]
We attempt to get a physical insight into grain alignment processes by studying basic properties of radiative torques (RATs). For this purpose we consider a simple toy model of a helical grain that reproduces well the basic features of RATs. The model grain consists of a spheroidal body with a mirror attached at an angle to it.
