The Stink Bugs (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) of Washington State [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Froeschner (1988) recorded 23 species of stink bugs (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) from Washington State. Based on material primarily housed in the M. T.

American rattlesnake (Crotalus durissus terrificus) bite accidents in dogs in Argentina

open access: yesArquivo Brasileiro de Medicina Veterinária e Zootecnia, 2000
The symptomatology and treatment of two dogs bitten by Crotalus durissus terrificus are described. Neurological signs were present few minutes after the accident with local anesthesia and ataxia of the affected limb and neurotoxic fascia.

The Lake Clear (41SM243) Site and Crotalus horridus atricaudatus [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
I fell heir to a collection of prehistoric Caddo sherds from my late Uncle Sam Whiteside and a location on a 7.5’ topographic map labeled Lake Clear. Sam Whiteside during the period from the mid-1950s to the late 1960s was very active in the East Texas ...

Atomically Modulating Competing Exchange Interactions in Centrosymmetric Skyrmion Hosts GdRu2X2 (X = Si and Ge)

open access: yesAdvanced Electronic Materials, EarlyView.
Our work bridges the gap between skyrmion discovery and material design by demonstrating how atomic‐scale control of exchange interactions enables tunable skyrmion phase transitions in centrosymmetric magnetic metals. ABSTRACT Magnetic skyrmions are topologically protected spin states that hold promise for shaping the future of electronics.

Predation of nestling house finches (Haemorhous mexicanus) by a dusky rattlesnake, Crotalus aquilus, in Hidalgo, Mexico

open access: yesRevista Mexicana de Biodiversidad, 2015
For the first time, a case of predation on a Haemorhous mexicanus nest by the dusky rattlesnake Crotalus aquilus is presented. The phenomenon of gluttony by this rattlesnake, which may have caused the death of the snake is also documented; since it had ...

Heirloom Dry Bean Variety Trial [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Dry beans (Phaseolus vulgaris), a high-protein pulse crop, have been grown in the Northeast since the 1800’s. As the local food movement continues to diversify and expand, consumers are asking stores to carry more and more locally-produced foods, and dry

Detection of Hemlock Woolly Adelgid (Hemiptera: Adelgidae) Infestations with Sticky Traps [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
We deployed sticky traps underneath the crown of eastern hemlock, Tsuga canadensis (L.) Carrière, to assess their sensitivity at detecting crawlers (1st instar nymphs) of the non-native hemlock woolly adelgid, Adelges tsugae Annand (Hemiptera: Adelgidae).

Rare‐Earth Yttrium Doping Advances High‐Performance AgSbTe2 Thermoelectrics

open access: yesAdvanced Energy Materials, EarlyView.
Y‐doped AgSbTe2 achieves band and microstructure co‐optimization, with coherent Y‐Ag2Te interfaces enhancing phonon scattering and reducing lattice thermal conductivity to 0.26 W m−1 K−1. Combined with valence‐band broadening and increased carrier concentration, this yields ZT ≈ 2 at 623 K, average ZT = 1.5, and 7.3 % conversion efficiency of a single ...

Estimating actual versus detected road mortality rates for a northern viper

open access: yesGlobal Ecology and Conservation, 2018
Mitigation of adverse effects of roads on wildlife benefits from a fundamental understanding of the number of animals killed by traffic. Road surveys are a key part in quantifying this mortality; however, without accounting for scavenging and observer ...
