Suppression of Rayleigh Backscattering in Resonators
2018 IEEE Photonics Conference (IPC), 2018We demonstrate dynamic suppression of Rayleigh backscattering in a whispering gallery mode resonator by locally breaking time-reversal symmetry through a Brillouin optomechanical interaction.

Temperature retrievals by Rayleigh backscatter lidar signals
Applied Optics, 1986Differences between retrieved temperatures from lidar and atmospheric model temperatures are calculated for four problems: (1) the effect of a transient thin aerosol layer at any altitude on temperature retrieved by a single-wavelength lidar; (2) the effect of residual aerosols on temperature retrieved by a two-wavelength lidar; (3) the errors due to ...

RSOA as a sawtooth generator for Rayleigh Backscattering effect mitigation
36th European Conference and Exhibition on Optical Communication, 2010Sawtooth signal at 2.5GHz has been obtained with an RSOA of 1GHz bandwidth. A measured wavelength shifting of 2.5GHz, obtained with the RSOA chirp induced phase modulation, allows 5dB Rayleigh Backscattering effect mitigation.

Rayleigh backscattering in optical fiber recirculating delay lines
Applied Optics, 1986We derive the backscattering impulse response of a recirculating fiber delay line. The response consists of periodic discontinuities that occur at multiples of the loop transit time. The magnitude of each discontinuity is found to depend only on the coupling coefficient and the number of recirculations and is independent of both propagation loss and ...

Rayleigh backscattering: a method to highly compress laser linewidth
Ultra-narrow linewidth laser with several hundred hertz at room temperature has attracted a great deal of attention in recent years and played a critical role in both optical sensing and communication fields. In this paper, a new method based on Rayleigh backscattering to highly compress the laser linewidth was proposed and demonstrated theoretically ...

Interferometry with Rayleigh backscattering in a single-mode optical fiber
Optics Letters, 1994A novel distributed sensing technique based on reflectometry is proposed. The technique uses the interference of the light waves backscattered within the resolution range of a reflectometer to detect the optical path changes in a single-mode fiber. Experimental results are presented, and practical realization of an intrusion detector that employs this ...

Rayleigh Backscattering Signatures of Optical Fibers—Their Properties and Applications
Optical Fiber Communication Conference/National Fiber Optic Engineers Conference 2013, 2013The properties of optical fiber Rayleigh scatter are reviewed from the perspective of high resolution, high sensitivity OFDR measurements. The statistical properties of single mode fiber are reviewed as well as Rayleigh scatter properties of PM fiber and erbium-doped fiber-optic amplifiers.

Backscattering at Rayleigh and other angles: A theoretical prediction
The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 1983The spectral representation approach used to calculate beam profile changes upon forward reflection T. D. K. Ngoc and W. G. Mayer, IEEE Trans. Sonics Ultrason. SU-27, 229 (1980)] is extended to include negative angles of reflection, i.e., backscattering. Calculations show that the amplitude of the backscattered beam is a strong function of the incident

Modelling of Rayleigh backscattering in plastic optical fiber
2003 High Frequency Postgraduate Student Colloquium (Cat. No.03TH8707), 2004The Rayleigh scattering coefficient within plastic optical fiber (POF), which is also called turbidity, has been investigated and parameters affecting the level of turbidity have been located and discussed. The Rayleigh attenuation model has been built on turbidity and has been verified by comparing with published data.

Rayleigh backscattering from the fundamental mode in multimode optical fibers
Applied Optics, 2016Rayleigh backscattering produced by an incident fundamental mode in a multimode optical fiber is analyzed using a diffraction technique, with a full set of backward-propagating modes being taken into consideration. Explicit formulas are derived for mode excitation efficiency via radial distributions of the mode fields, and it is proved that only half ...
