Observation of a Random Fiber Laser Induced by Rayleigh Backscattering
2014 International Semiconductor Laser Conference, 2014We present several observations of a random fiber lasing effect induced by Rayleigh backscattering only. A reflective semiconductor optical amplifier re-amplifies the non-coherent light fed back by 25km of SMF acting as a scattered mirror.

Optical fiber identification using Rayleigh backscattered light

This work proposes a new fiber identification method that uses the spatial dependency of the power of Rayleigh backscattered light.

Identification of sensors in optical fiber networks with Rayleigh backscattering
SPIE Proceedings, 2017This paper presents a new method of identifying an optical sensor like Fiber Bragg Grating1,2 (FBG) temperature sensors. The identifier is a pattern inscribed into the core of an optical fiber by a femtosecond laser. A Rayleigh backscattering interrogator is used to readout the identifier.

Effect of thermal aging on Rayleigh backscattering in an optical fiber
Optical Engineering, 2009We investigate the effect of thermal aging on the optical properties of multimode silica fibers. Samples were submitted to several heating-cooling cycles of 8 h each. Analyses were performed using an optical spectrum analyzer and an optical time-domain reflectometer to determine the signal loss.

Limitation of rotation sensing in IORG by Rayleigh backscattering noise
EPL (Europhysics Letters), 2011Rayleigh backscattering noise (RBN) in integrated optical resonance gyroscope (IORG) is theoretically and experimentally researched. The SiO2 waveguide resonator performance degradation of IORG due to RBN is analyzed firstly, and then the nonlinear output of IORG caused by RBN is simulated.

Rayleigh backscattering theory for single-mode optical fibers
Journal of the Optical Society of America, 1983The theory of backscattering in single-mode optical fibers is described through use of a correlation function for the refractive-index fluctuation in the fiber. A simple formula for the backscattered power is derived using two correlation functions for the Booker–Gordon and Gaussian models.
