On the role of Rayleigh damping
Journal of Sound and Vibration, 1995The computation of the Rayleigh damping coefficients α and β is an important consideration in the area of the modal superposition technique. In this paper, an experimental investigation carried out on square and rectangular plates with various boundary conditions to determine the damping ratios for a few modes of vibration is reported.

Multi-frequency Rayleigh damped elastography: in silico studies
Medical Engineering & Physics, 2015Rayleigh damping (RD) is commonly used to model energy attenuation for analyses of structures subjected to dynamic loads. In time-harmonic Magnetic Resonance Elastography (MRE), the RD model was shown to be non-identifiable at a single frequency data due to the ill-posed nature of the imaginary components describing energy dissipation arising from ...

Suboptimal Rayleigh damping coefficients in seismic analysis of viscously-damped structures
Earthquake Engineering and Engineering Vibration, 2014An optimization method for the consistent evaluation of two Rayleigh damping coefficients is proposed. By minimizing an objective function such as an error term of the peak displacement of a structure, the two coefficients can be determined with response spectral analysis. The optimization method degenerates into the conventional method used in current

Magnetoelastic coupling and Rayleigh damping
COMPEL - The international journal for computation and mathematics in electrical and electronic engineering, 2004This paper presents a magnetoelastic dynamic FE model. As first approach, the effect of magnetostriction and strong coupling is not considered. The effect of Rayleigh damping factors on the vibrational behaviour of the stator core of a synchronous generator is studied using the presented model.

Rayleigh Damping in Abaqus/Explicit Dynamic Analysis
Applied Mechanics and Materials, 2014In the nonlinear time-history analysis for high-rise building, different damping models may lead to results with great difference. Limited by the stable time increment, the stiffness proportional damping is usually neglected in Abaqus/Explicit, and only a simplified mass proportional damping is used, which can be derived from the fundamental frequency ...

Rayleigh Damping Effects on Global Analysis of Umbilicals
Volume 4: Pipeline and Riser Technology, 2011Despite global analysis of umbilicals is a well-known area in the offshore systems design, some topics are still opened for discussions. One of these topics refers to the structural damping. Obviously, the viscous damping caused by hydrodynamic drag forces is the major source of damping to the whole system.

Analysis of proportional damping or Rayleigh damping on damped and undamped systems
2017 Fifth International Conference on Aerospace Science & Engineering (ICASE), 2017Damping mechanisms have been active areas of research for a long time in history, despite this its understanding is still rudimentary as compared to the other traits of modeling. The actual problem is that even now it is not clear, which state variables are relevant for the computation of damping forces, which makes it very difficult to model in Finite

Topological hysteresis as a model for Rayleigh damping
Materials Science and Engineering: A, 2006Abstract To account for the large magnetomechanical damping of demagnetized specimens, we propose as a model Landau's arrangement of magnetic domains with no overall magnetic moment. To analyze the model, we use the nature of magnetostriction to transform the data from internal friction, Q −1 , and strain amplitude, ɛ , into energy loss and volume

Rayleigh Damped Magnetic Resonance Elastograpy
2008A three-dimensional, incompressible, Rayleigh damped magnetic resonance elastography (MRE) material property reconstruction algorithm capable of reconstructing the spatial distribution of both the real and imaginary parts of the shear modulus, density and bulk modulus from full-field MR-detected harmonic motion data was developed.

Problems with Rayleigh Damping in Base-Isolated Buildings
Journal of Structural Engineering, 2008In dynamic analysis, the energy dissipation in a base-isolated building is typically accounted for by allocating damping properties independently to the superstructure and to the isolation system. Rayleigh damping applied to the superstructure component alone is often used to represent the superstructure energy dissipation.
