Photosynthetic Reaction Centers in bacteria
Chemical & Engineering News Archive, 1990The photochemistry of photosynthesis begins in complexes called reaction centers. These have become model systems to study the fundamental process by which plants and bacteria convert and store solar energy as chemical free energy. In green plants, photosynthesis occurs in two systems, each of which contains a different reaction center, working in ...

Germinal centers (GCs) are transient microstructures formed within the follicles of secondary lymphoid tissues in response to certain types of immunization and foreign pathogens. A mature GC comprises two functionally distinct compartments, a dark zone (DZ) and a light zone (LZ).

Electrostatics of Photosynthetic Reaction Centers in Membranes
2006 International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society, 2006Photosynthetic reaction centers are integral membrane complexes. They have potential application as molecular photovoltaic structures and have been used in diverse technological applications. A three-dimensional electrostatic model of the photosystem I reaction center (PSI) embedded in a lipid membrane is presented. The potential is obtained by solving

Evolution of photosynthetic reaction centers
Biosystems, 1981The common ancestor of all photosynthetic prokaryotes and organelles contained chlorophyll (Chl) a. All green and purple photosynthetic bacteria descended from a common bacteriochlorophyll (Bchl) a-containing ancestor which diverged from the Chl a line. Separate PS-I and PS-II reaction centers may have evolved before the appearance of Bchl a.

The Bacterial Reaction Center: Where is the Center?
1984The reaction center (RC) of phototrophic bacteria is responsible for primary photochemistry. It was originally described as a complex composed of three polypeptides (H, M, and L) with the following cofactors: four bacteriochloro-phylls, two bacteriopheophytins, one carotenoid, one or two quinones, and a non heme iron (1).

New methods to generate alternative fuels, specifically through light driven reactions, are of major contemporary interest. Dihydrogen is a particularly attractive alternative fuel since it contains no carbon and thus does not contribute to increased levels of greenhouse gases.

Although it is not likely that reactions involving color centers will ever be put on the precise thermodynamic basis of many reactions in liquid solutions where in many cases it has been possible to determine not only all of the species taking part in the process but their chemical activities as well, quantitative studies of the kind outlined here have

Evolution of Reaction Centers in Photosynthetic Prokaryotes
1987Publisher Summary This chapter focuses on reaction centers (RCs) of photosynthetic prokaryotes and those phylogenetic characteristics that are most significant to reconstruct the ancestry of these bacteria. Photosynthesis is defined as the biological conversion of light energy to chemical energy in the form of electrochemical gradients and/or ATP ...
