Status and future of seed conservation of threatened plants in the post‐2020 era

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, Volume 8, Issue 5, Page 1763-1777, September 2026.
Ambitious targets have been set to backup seeds of threatened plants by the global strategy for plant conservation (GSPC), but it is unclear in how far these targets have been met and how seed collection should be organized to meet future challenges. Here, we provide an overview of the status of 44 countries in achieving seed conservation targets.

Induction of tolerance to desiccation and to subzero temperatures in embryos of recalcitrant seeds of inga

open access: yesJournal of Seed Science
Drying, widely used for storing orthodox seeds for prolonged periods, cannot be applied to recalcitrant seeds, which are sensitive to desiccation. Thus, inclusion of species with recalcitrant seeds, like inga, in reforestation programs or even for ...

A synergistic alliance between nematophagous fungi and organic matter against plant‐parasitic nematodes: a systematic review

open access: yesPest Management Science, Volume 82, Issue 9, Page 8104-8119, September 2026.
Certain beneficial fungi are widely used to control harmful nematodes in crops, especially when combined with organic matter. Together, they improve soil health, support plant growth, and enhance nutrient cycling. This natural partnership offers a promising, environmentally friendly approach to strengthening sustainable agriculture and reducing ...

Orthodox vs. Recalcitrant? Germination and Early Growth of Phoenix Species (Arecaceae) Stored for up to Ten Years

open access: yesHorticulturae
This study investigated seed storage behavior and seedling development patterns in the genus Phoenix L. (Arecaceae), addressing the knowledge gap regarding orthodox versus recalcitrant characteristics in these ecologically and economically significant ...

Bt agave: why it is time to explore a new biotechnological frontier

open access: yesPest Management Science, Volume 82, Issue 9, Page 8053-8063, September 2026.
Drylands cover 41% of Earth, requiring sustainable crops. Agave, drought‐ and heat‐adapted, offers high‐value products with low water needs. Pests limit yield, yet Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) Cry proteins, successful in other plants, remain unexploited in Agave.

Effects of Temperature Peaks and Water Stress on Tropical Seed Germination: Experimental Trials With Species From Brazil's Northeastern Coastal Zone

open access: yesBiotropica, Volume 58, Issue 5, September 2026.
ABSTRACT Understanding the effects of high temperatures and water deficit on germination provides valuable insights into seed stress tolerance, guiding the use of native seeds in ecological restoration. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of (1) temperature peaks and (2) water stress treatments and post‐stress recovery on the germination of some ...

Desiccation tolerance mechanisms in the green lineage and beyond

open access: yesNew Phytologist, Volume 251, Issue 6, Page 3159-3175, September 2026.
Ancient origin and recurrent evolution of desiccation tolerance in the green lineage. Summary Water is essential for life on Earth, yet some plants can survive the near‐complete loss of cellular water, a trait known as desiccation tolerance. Although rare in vegetative tissues of vascular plants, desiccation tolerance is scattered across the plant ...

Physiological behaviour of Blepharocalyx salicifolius and Casearia decandra seeds on the tolerance to dehydration

open access: yesJournal of Seed Science
The present work aimed to develop studies on the tolerance to dehydration of Blepharocalyx salicifolius and Casearia decandra seeds. In order to verify the effect of drying on the seeds, they were placed in desiccators containing a saline solution ...
