Nerve growth factor and its receptors in asthma and inflammation

European Journal of Pharmacology, 2004
Nerve growth factor (NGF) is a high molecular weight peptide that belongs to the neurotrophin family. It is synthesized by various structural and inflammatory cells and activates two types of receptors, the TrkA (tropomyosin-receptor kinase A) receptor and the p75(NTR) receptor, in the death receptor family. NGF was first studied for its essential role

The Membrane Receptor for Nerve Growth Factor

1991
Receptors for mammalian growth factors are integral membrane proteins designed to have multiple functions for communicating with other cells and for intracellular signal transduction. These cell surface proteins have binding sites for the ligand that face the external environment and also an effector site that generates a biological signal within the ...

The expression of growth factor receptors during nerve regeneration

Restorative Neurology and Neuroscience, 1990
Growth factors and their receptors play a central role in the regulation of normal and injury-induced regenerative cell growth. In this article we review the data on the expression of growth factor receptors for β-nerve growth factor, platelet-derived growth factor and serum transferrin during regeneration following peripheral nerve injury. Particular

Nicotine stimulation of nerve growth factor receptor expression

Life Sciences, 1994
Previous studies have suggested that nicotine may have beneficial actions in neurodegenerative disease models. The purpose of the experiments described in this study was to determine whether the long lasting and beneficial effects of nicotine observed previously could be expressed through actions upon nerve growth factor (NGF) receptors.

Nerve Growth Factor Receptors in Human Neuroblastoma Cells

Journal of Neurochemistry, 1987
AbstractReceptors for the nerve growth factor protein (NGFR) present in the human neuroblastoma cell line LAN‐1 were characterized. LAN‐1 cells display high‐affinity (type I, with KD value of 5.9 × 10‐11M) and low‐affinity (type II, with KD value of 9.2 × 10‐9M) binding to NGF.

Peripheral nerve regeneration: Role of growth factors and their receptors

International Journal of Developmental Neuroscience, 1993
AbstractGrowth factors play a central role in the regulation of normal and injury‐induced regenerative cell growth. The purpose of this article is to summarize the available data on the expression of different growth factors and their receptors in the injured peripheral nervous system and to discuss their possible role in promoting peripheral nerve ...

Requirement for phosphatidylinositol-3 kinase in the prevention of apoptosis by nerve growth factor.

Science, 1995
Nerve growth factor (NGF) induces both differentiation and survival of neurons by binding to the Trk receptor protein tyrosine kinase. Although Ras is required for differentiation, it was not required for NGF-mediated survival of rat pheochromocytoma PC ...

Nerve Growth Factor Synthesis and Nerve Growth Factor Receptor Expression in Neural Development

1991
Publisher Summary This chapter describes nerve growth factor (NGF) in the context of the neurotrophic theory. It also discusses its implications for understanding the molecular basis of neuron–target interactions in the developing nervous system. Since its discovery, NGF has been the prototype of a class of proteins termed “neurotrophic factors” that

Characteristics of Partially Purified Nerve Growth Factor Receptor

Journal of Neurochemistry, 1987
Abstract: Receptors for the nerve growth factor protein (NGF) have been isolated from three cell types [embryonic chicken sensory neurons (dorsal root sensory ganglia; DRG), rat pheochromocytoma (PC 12) and human neuroblastoma (LAN‐1) cells] and have been shown to be similar with respect to equilibrium dissociation constants.

Expression of nerve growth factor receptors in cutaneous inflammation

British Journal of Dermatology, 1998
Evidence indicates that the neurotrophin nerve growth factor (NGF) is a mediator of cutaneous inflammatory responses. Cellular responses to NGF are facilitated by two receptors called trk A and p75 neurotrophin receptor (p75NTR). In the current study we have investigated the expression of these receptors in lesional and non-lesional skin from patients ...
