In order to sustain normal metabolic processes, the cell must recruit from its external environment an array of ions, molecules, and macromolecules. Small molecules, such as ions, water, and monosaccharides, can gain entry into the cytosol of the cell through water-filled channels.

Quantification of receptor-mediated endocytosis
2006This method allows measuring of the receptor-mediated internalization of 125I-labeled conalbumin, the chicken egg white isoform of transferrin. Kinetic data, i.e. the rate constant k(i) for the initial internalization process, can be extracted from the data by linear curve fitting using an In/Sur plot (intracellular label/cell surface label over time).

This volume focuses exclusively on those endocytic processes that sequester proteins by a selective, receptor-mediated mechanism. In such an endocytic process, cell surface receptors specifically bind protein ligands and localize them to specialized invaginations of the plasma membrane.

Receptor-mediated endocytosis in renal proximal tubule
Pflügers Archiv - European Journal of Physiology, 2009Proteins filtered in renal glomeruli are removed from the tubular fluid by endocytosis in the proximal tubule mediated by the two receptors megalin and cubilin. After endocytic uptake, the proteins are transferred to lysosomes for degradation, while the receptors are returned to the apical cell membrane by receptor recycling in dense apical tubules. In

Receptor-Mediated Endocytosis of Nanoparticles of Various Shapes
Nano Letters, 2011Cellular uptake through endocytosis is crucial for drug delivery and nanomedicine. However, the conditions under which passive endocytosis (i.e., not ATP driven) takes place are not well understood. We report MD simulations of the passive uptake of ligand-coated nanoparticles with varying size, shape, coverage, and membrane-binding strength.

Signals for Receptor-Mediated Endocytosis
1993Receptor-mediated endocytosis is the mechanism by which a variety of nutrients, hormones and growth factors are selectively removed from the circulation and rapidly taken up by cells (reviewed in Goldstein et al., 1985). Studies of the low density lipoprotein receptor (LDLR) provided the first evidence that the initial step in this process is the ...

Vasopressin receptor-mediated endocytosis: current view
American Journal of Physiology-Renal Physiology, 1991A number of peptide hormones have been shown to undergo receptor-mediated endocytosis (RME). RME involves the internalization of receptor-ligand complexes followed by delivery to an intracellular compartment, the endosome, from which ligands or receptors can be delivered to lysosomes or other cellular destinations.

Microscopic Aspects of Receptor-Mediated Endocytosis
JAMA: The Journal of the American Medical Association, 1980seen by transmission electron microscopy. The section shows the characteristic bristle-coat on the cytoplasmic surface of this indented region of the plasma membrane referred to as a "coated pit." These stable indented pits are the sites of clustering of receptor-ligand complexes involved in the receptor-mediated endocytosis of peptide hormones and ...

Molecular and Cellular Mechanisms of Receptor-Mediated Endocytosis
DNA and Cell Biology, 1991In general, receptors are involved in pathways of endocytosis, either constitutive or ligand induced. These receptors cluster in clathrin-coated pits, enter the cell via clathrin-coated vesicles, pass through an acidified endosome in which the receptors and ligands are sorted, and then either recycle to the cell surface, become stored intracellularly ...

Regulation of receptor-mediated endocytosis by phorbol esters
Biochemical Pharmacology, 1991This review will focus on the regulation of receptor trafficking by phorbol esters. An initial summary will describe the effects of 4β-phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA) stimulation on the endocytosis and recycling of cell surface receptors. This will be followed by a discussion of possible mechanisms of PMA-stimulated alterations in receptor ...
