Drop size and holdup in a reciprocating plate extraction column
Chemical Engineering Science, 1973This paper reports measurements of droplet sizes and holdup in liquid—liquid systems in a 2 in. dia. reciprocating plate extraction column, in the absence of mass transfer. The Sauter mean droplet diameter was found to depend on the product of plate amplitude and frequency and on the system properties, but it was not in general affected by the ...

Transient behaviour of holdup in a reciprocating plate extraction column
Chemical Engineering Science, 1986Abstract Transfer functions relating the holdup to the intensity of plate reciprocation and to the velocity of the dispersed phase were determined from experiments in a 4m high VPE reciprocating plate solvent extraction column. The system under investigation was toluene dispersed in water without mass transfer between the phases.

Liquid‐liquid extraction in a reciprocating screen plate column
The Canadian Journal of Chemical Engineering, 1991AbstractA novel reciprocating‐plate liquid‐liquid extraction column is proposed. It features a simple design that utilizes as the plates mesh screens with a fractional free area larger than 64%.A hydrodynamic and mass transfer study of the column was carried out in which the existence of a uniform liquid‐liquid dispersion throughout the column at ...

Computer control of holdup in a reciprocating plate extraction column
The Canadian Journal of Chemical Engineering, 1982AbstractThis paper describes the application of computer control to a pilot scale (15 cm diameter) Reciprocating Plate Solvent Extraction Column. The system under investigation was kerosene dispersed in water without mass transfer between the phases. The control objective was the regulation and set point tracking of the holdup of the dispersed phase ...

Axial mixing of continuous phase in reciprocating plate columns
Chemical Engineering Science, 1984Abstract The residence time distribution of the continuous phase in reciprocating plate columns is experimentally investigated for gas-liquid and liquid-liquid systems and modelled using Gamma function extension of the ideal-stage cascade model. The equivalent number of ideal stages evaluated from the model is related to the flow numbers defined ...

Liquid-liquid mass transfer in a reciprocating-plate column
The Chemical Engineering Journal and the Biochemical Engineering Journal, 1994Abstract Liquid-liquid mass transfer has been experimentally studied for the kerosene (dispersed)-water (continuous) system in a reciprocating-plate column, using benzoic acid and n -butyric acid as solutes. The effect of the flow rates of the phases, the agitation rate of the plate stack, the perforation diameter and free area of the plate and the ...

Effect of Plate Material on Dispersed-Phase Holdup in a Karr Reciprocating Plate Column
Solvent Extraction and Ion Exchange, 2011Abstract The effect of plate material on the dispersed-phase holdup in a Karr reciprocating plate column is studied. Existing models cannot predict the observed degradation of the performance of plates as they foul. Experimental data of dispersed-phase holdup have been obtained for a 10 vol% tributyl phosphate/kerosene-phenol-water system in a 50 mm ...

Power dissipation and flow patterns in reciprocating baffle‐plate columns
The Canadian Journal of Chemical Engineering, 1995AbstractTime‐averaged power dissipation rates have been measured in water in a 19.4 cm diameter reciprocating plate column operating at frequencies 0.6 to 3 Hz and amplitudes 5 to 20 mm. Measurements were also taken in water in a 15 cm diameter column operated at 1 to 5.7 Hz with amplitudes 1 to 10 mm.

A correlation for drop size and slip velocity in reciprocating plate column
Bioprocess Engineering, 1998Drop size distributions, mean drop diameter and slip velocity are experimentally studied in a reciprocating plate column. The correlations for the above are presented in terms of plate geometry, flow rates of phases and physical properties of the system covering a wide range in experimental conditions.
