A model for axial mixing in reciprocating plate columns

Chemical Engineering Science, 1990
Abstract Axial mixing in reciprocating plate columns with different plate geometry has been investigated for single-phase flow. Data are presented on the steady-state concentration profile of a salt tracer around a single reciprocating plate and between two reciprocating plates in a 5 cm diameter column.

Backmixing in Karr Reciprocating-Plate Extraction Columns

Industrial & Engineering Chemistry Research, 2006
A study of backmixing in the continuous phase has been presented for a 50 mm diameter Karr reciprocating-plate extraction column using the two-phase system kerosene/tributyl phosphate (continuous)−...

Performance Correlations for Reciprocating Plate Extraction Columns

Solvent Extraction and Ion Exchange, 1988
Abstract Abstract The height equivalent to a theoretical stage (HETS) is estimated using one correlation to describe behavior for reciprocating speeds below the optimum point and a second expression to estimate HETS values for reciprocating speeds above it.

Solvent extraction of copper in a reciprocating plate column

The Canadian Journal of Chemical Engineering, 1978
AbstractEquilibrium data for the distribution of copper between an aqueous solution and a 20% solution of di‐(2 ethyl hexyl) phosphoric acid in kerosene has been obtained by shake‐flask experiments. The capacity of the organic phase for copper is greatly improved when the ammonium salt of D2EHPA is used.

Axial dispersion in a reciprocating plate extraction column

The Canadian Journal of Chemical Engineering, 1976
AbstractAxial dispersion coefficients have been measured in the continuous phase of a 5 cm diameter reciprocating plate extraction column. The measurements were made by observing the course of an instantaneous chemical reaction between acid and base in the continuous phase, using phenolphthalein as indicator.

Axial mixing and scaleup of reciprocating plate columns

The Canadian Journal of Chemical Engineering, 1987
AbstractAxial mixing measurements in single phase (water) flow have been taken in open‐type reciprocating plate columns of diameters 25.4 and 508 mm. In the case of the smaller column, two‐phase axial mixing was measured, both in the dispersed phase (water dispersed in n‐heptane) and the continuous phase (with n‐heptane dispersed in water).

A reciprocating-plate extraction column for hydrometallurgical applications

Metallurgical Transactions, 1973
Solvent extraction columns equipped with reciprocating plates are discussed. It is shown that reciprocating-plate columns with two sets of plates, alternately mounted on separate rods, and with a phase shift of 180 deg between the motion of the two rods, are, from a mechanical standpoint much superior to previously proposed types: under practical ...

Holdup and flooding in reciprocating plate extraction columns

The Canadian Journal of Chemical Engineering, 1984
AbstractMeasurements of dispersed phase holdup and flooding conditions have been carried out in a 5 cm diameter reciprocating plate extraction column. A simplified predictive model for holdup and flooding has been developed assuming uniform hydrodynamic conditions throughout the column.

Performance of a reciprocating‐plate extraction column

AIChE Journal, 1959
AbstractAn open type of reciprocating‐plate extraction column was developed, and it is proposed that the scaling up of such a column should be straightforward; that is, the height of an equivalent theoretical stage (H.E.T.S.) and the throughput per unit area should be independent of the diameter of the column.Plates having 5/8‐in.–diameter holes and 62.

Flooding and axial dispersion in reciprocating plate extraction columns

The Canadian Journal of Chemical Engineering, 1979
AbstractThe flooding and axial mixing characteristics of a 15 cm diameter reciprocating plate extraction column with six different plate arrangements handling kerosene dispersed in water are reported. A general correlation for flooding in the emulsion flow regime is developed and applied to the present results and to published data on other columns and
