IEEE Intelligent Systems, 1998
At the Dartmouth Robotics Laboratory, we have a vision of the future: a modular robot that can assume a snake shape to traverse a tunnel, reconfigure upon exiting as a six-legged robot to traverse rough terrain, and change shape and gait to climb stairs and enter a building.

Reconfigurable adaptable micro-robot
IEEE SMC'99 Conference Proceedings. 1999 IEEE International Conference on Systems, Man, and Cybernetics (Cat. No.99CH37028), 2003The research on micro-robots with distributed intelligence, which are capable of reconfiguring themselves to adapt to various defense and civilian tasks, is relatively new. A team of interdisciplinary faculty from the College of Engineering at Michigan State University has taken this challenge and are designing micro-robots that incorporate learning ...

In this paper, the authors present hexagonal and parallelepipedic modules used for reconfigurable mobile robots. These modules are equipped with types of wheels like the classic and omnidirectional type. By combining these modules the authors achieve multiple types of constructive solutions of wheeled mobile robots.

Self-reconfigurable multilegged robot swarms collectively accomplish challenging terradynamic tasks
Science Robotics, 2021Multilegged swarm robots with self-reconfigurability can perform diverse tasks in variable terrain. Swarms of ground-based robots are presently limited to relatively simple environments, which we attribute in part to the lack of locomotor capabilities ...

Programming reconfigurable modular robots
Proceedings of 2012 IEEE/ASME 8th IEEE/ASME International Conference on Mechatronic and Embedded Systems and Applications, 2012Highly reconfigurable modular robots face unique control and programming challenges due to the large scale of the robotic systems, high level of reconfigurability of the systems, and high number of controllable degrees of freedom in the system. Modular robot systems such as iMobot must face these challenges in novel ways.
