Management of upper airway edema caused by hereditary angioedema

open access: yesAllergy, Asthma & Clinical Immunology, 2010
Hereditary angioedema is a rare disorder with a genetic background involving mutations in the genes encoding C1-INH and of factor XII. Its etiology is unknown in a proportion of cases. Recurrent edema formation may involve the subcutis and the submucosa -

Increased parasite resistance and recurrent airway obstruction in horses of a high-prevalence family [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
BACKGROUND: Equine recurrent airway obstruction (RAO) shares many characteristics with human asthma. In humans, an inverse relationship between susceptibility to asthma and resistance to parasites is suspected.

The role of radiology in diagnosing synchronous subglottic and mediastinal haemangioma: a rare clinical entity

open access: yesJournal of the Pakistan Medical Association
Subglottic haemangioma is a rare and life-threatening condition in infancy. A four-month-old girl presented with cough and wheezing with a history of three prior hospitalisations for bronchiolitis and inspiratory stridor.

Reciprocal control of viral infection and phosphoinositide dynamics

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Phosphoinositides, although scarce, regulate key cellular processes, including membrane dynamics and signaling. Viruses exploit these lipids to support their entry, replication, assembly, and egress. The central role of phosphoinositides in infection highlights phosphoinositide metabolism as a promising antiviral target.

A systematic review of the association between pulmonary tuberculosis and the development of chronic airflow obstruction in adults [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Includes abstract.Includes bibliographical references.Pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) as a cause of COPD is debated, with some, but not all evidence suggesting an association between the two conditions.

Analysis of genomic copy number variation in equine recurrent airway obstruction (heaves) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
We explored the involvement of genomic copy number variants (CNVs) in susceptibility to recurrent airway obstruction (RAO), or heaves-an asthmalike inflammatory disease in horses.

Developmental programmes drive cellular plasticity, disease progression and therapy resistance in lung adenocarcinoma

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This study shows that lung adenocarcinomas exploit developmental branching morphogenesis to acquire a therapy resistant basal‐like tumour cell state. This process was found to be regulated by combined TP53 loss‐of‐function and type‐I interferon signalling, identifying a novel axis for biomarker and therapeutic target discovery.

Editorial on the Special Issue “Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA)”

open access: yesLife
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is the most common form of sleep-disordered breathing and is characterized by recurrent episodes of complete or partial upper airway obstruction during sleep, resulting in oxygen desaturation, autonomic dysfunction and sleep

Respiratory Viral Infections and Early Asthma in Childhood

open access: yesAllergology International, 2006
Respiratory viral infections profoundly influence the disease activity of wheezing illnesses and asthma in early childhood. Viral bronchiolitis shares many features with asthma and a subset of children develop recurrent wheezing after their initial ...
