[Translocation in red algae].

Leucine-(U)-C(14) applied to the midrib of a young phylloid of Delesseria sanguinea moves basipetally and acropetally and eventually appears in other phylloids of the same plant. The highest velocity of transport calculated was 63 cm/h. The pathway of movement seems to be the veins of the phylloids and the central core of the cauloid.

Phytoferritin in the red alga Constantinea (Cryptonemiales)

Chloroplasts in reproductive blades of the marine red alga Constaninea subulifera contained crystalline aggregations of phytoferritin. The native electron density of the particles' iron component was demonstrated in unstained sections, sections deosmified with periodic acid, and specimens prepared without osmium postfixation.

Membrane tubules in the tetraspores of a red alga

Newly released tetraspores of the red algaNitrophyllum punctatum exhibit numerous tubular structures in their peripheral cytoplasm. They are formed by a unit membrane and present an evident continuity with the plasmalemma. Sometimes they are branched. They seem to increase the total cell surface and might be involved in secretion or osmoregulation.
