Branch angle in red maple trees
Canadian Journal of Forest Research, 1988The vertical branch angle 10 cm from the base of 17 branches on 6-year-old red maple (Acerrubrum L.) trees increased as leaves grew out and decreased when leaves abscised, with a net increase in angle. The angle 20 cm from the base of 222 branches on five 32-year-old trees did not increase with increasing branch age.

Rapid capture of growing space by red maple
Canadian Journal of Forest Research, 2009Red maple ( Acer rubrum L.) is becoming increasingly dominant in forest stands throughout the eastern United States. To investigate the reasons for the increase, we examined the development of red maple and oak ( Quercus spp.) seedlings and stump sprouts following the harvest of oak-dominated stands.
