Coherent ONU based on 850 µm-long cavity-RSOA for next-generation ultra-dense access network [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
In this Letter, an efficient bidirectional differential phase-shift keying (DPSK)-DPSK transmission for a ultradense wavelength division-multiplexed passive optical network is proposed. A single distributed feedback laser at the optical network unit (ONU)

Ultra-low-reflectivity semiconductor optical amplifiers without antireflection coatings

open access: yesElectronics Letters, 1990
High-performance, tilted stripe ridge waveguide semiconductor optical amplifiers which require no antireflection coating to achieve reflectivities of less than −40 dB are demonstrated. This very low reflectivity is found to be both largely independent of polarisation and wavelength, and also easily reproducible from wafer to wafer.

Bit- and Power-Loading—A Comparative Study on Maximizing the Capacity of RSOA Based Colorless DMT Transmitters

open access: yesApplied Sciences, 2017
We present a comparative study of the capacity increase brought by bit- and power-loading discrete multi-tone (DMT) modulation for low-cost colorless transmitters.

Centralized-Light-Source Two-Way PAM8/PAM4 FSO Communications With Parallel Optical Injection Locking Operation

open access: yesIEEE Access, 2019
For the first time up to our knowledge, a centralized-light-source two-way eight-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM8)/four-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM4) free-space optical (FSO) communication with parallel optical injection-locked vertical ...

Thermoreflectance Detection of Point Defects Resulting from Focused Ion Beam Milling

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Focused ion beam (FIB) milling is a common tool for nanoscale material processing, however irradiation damage, redeposition, and contamination can occur. We use several characterization tools to show FIB‐induced effects beyond 1 mm from the milled area.

Optically Integrated InP–Si$_3$ N$_4$ Hybrid Laser

open access: yesIEEE Photonics Journal, 2016
We describe the first demonstration and characterization of an optically integrated InP–Si $_3$N$_4$ hybrid laser. The laser is formed by integration of an InP-based reflective semiconductor optical amplifier with a Si$_3$N $_4$ based feedback ...

Planar Solid‐State Nanopores Toward Scalable Nanofluidic Integration Based on CMOS Technology

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
We present a scalable silicon‐based fabrication strategy for planar solid‐state nanopores to enable their integration with complex nanofluidic systems. Prototype devices demonstrate normal voltage‐current characteristics, good noise performance, and appreciable streaming currents. Our CMOS‐compatible fabrication process offers precise geometric control

Novel Tailoring of Ternary ZnS‐MXene‐TiO2 Nanocomposite Heterojunction and Its Tunable Electrochemical Properties With Enhanced Photocatalytic Degradation

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
ZnS‐MXene‐TiO2 nanocomposite heterojunction for photocatalytic decomposition of this methylene blue dye (MB) greatly improves light absorption, charge separation, and active site area. Two‐dimensional MXene forms nanocomposites by easily combining them with 0D (quantum dots), 1D (tube and wire), 2D (plane and sheet), and 3D (particle and lamellar ...

Self-Seeded RSOA-Fiber Cavity Lasers vs. ASE Spectrum-Sliced or Externally Seeded Transmitters—A Comparative Study

open access: yesApplied Sciences, 2015
Reflective semiconductor optical amplifier fiber cavity lasers (RSOA-FCLs) are appealing, colorless, self-seeded, self-tuning and cost-efficient upstream transmitters. They are of interest for wavelength division multiplexed passive optical networks (WDM-
