Explaining negative refraction without negative refractive indices [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of the Optical Society of America A, 2018
Negative refraction through a triangular prism may be explained without assigning a negative refractive index to the prism by using array theory. For the case of a beam incident upon the wedge, the array theory accurately predicts the beam transmission angle through the prism and provides an estimate of the frequency interval at which negative ...

Polarization‐resolved femtosecond Vis/IR spectroscopy tailored for resolving weak signals in biological samples using minimal sample volume

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Unique biological samples, such as site‐specific mutant proteins, are available only in limited quantities. Here, we present a polarization‐resolved transient infrared spectroscopy setup with referencing to improve signal‐to‐noise tailored towards tracing small signals. We provide an overview of characterizing the excitation conditions for polarization‐

A Depolarizing Leak in Sodium Bicarbonate Cotransporter NBCe1 Causes Brain Edema

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objectives SLC4A4 encodes electrogenic sodium bicarbonate cotransporter NBCe1, prominently expressed in kidney and brain. Recessive loss‐of‐function variants in SLC4A4 cause proximal renal tubular acidosis, no brain edema. In the brain, NBCe1 is expressed by astrocytes, where it regulates pH and mediates astrocyte volume changes.

Cooperative role of MDSCs and Tregs in alum-induced alloimmune tolerance in corneal transplantation

open access: yesScientific Reports
Alum, a widely used adjuvant, has recently been recognized for its capacity to modulate immune responses beyond classical activation. In this study, we investigated whether alum-induced expansion of myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) and their ...

Risk of Retinopathy Associated with Long‐Term Use of Hydroxychloroquine in Patients with Rheumatic Diseases: A Systematic Review and Meta‐Analysis

open access: yesArthritis Care &Research, Accepted Article.
Objective We aimed to estimate the prevalence and cumulative incidence of hydroxychloroquine retinopathy (HCQ‐R) and its risk factors among long‐term HCQ users with rheumatic diseases through a systematic review and meta‐analysis of observational studies that used spectral‐domain OCT (SD‐OCT) for screening. Methods A systematic search of PubMed, Scopus,

Corneal Astigmatism After Cataract Surgery: A Review of Mechanisms, Outcomes, and Surgical Considerations

open access: yesOptics
Background: This narrative review aims to assess multiple strategies available to evaluate and manage corneal astigmatism in the context of cataract surgery, with a focus on the surgical techniques, intraocular lens (IOL) selection, and the integration ...

Sensitivity of the corneal-plane refractive compensation to change in power and axial position of an intraocular lens

open access: yesAfrican Vision and Eye Health, 2009
If an intraocular lens is displaced or if its power is changed what are the consequences for the refractive compensation of the eye?  Gaussian optics is used to obtain explicit formulae for the sensitivityof the corneal-plane refractive compensation ...
