Refractive error accuracy and user perceptions of a smartphone home-based tester

open access: yesAfrican Vision and Eye Health
Background: Uncorrected refractive error accounts for nearly half of the global burden of vision impairment. The EyeQue personal vision tracker (EPVT) was created as a convenient smartphone refractometer to be used at home and order spectacles online ...

Creating materials with a desired refraction coefficient: numerical experiments [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2010
A recipe for creating materials with a desired refraction coefficient is implemented numerically. The following assumptions are used: \bee \zeta_m=h(x_m)/a^\kappa,\quad d=O(a^{(2-\kappa)/3}),\quad M=O(1/a^{2-\kappa}),\quad \kappa\in(0,1), \eee where $\zeta_m$ and $x_m$ are the boundary impedance and center of the $m$-th ball, respectively, $h(x)\in C(D)

Synthetic Active Liquid Crystals Powered by Acoustic Waves

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
A fully synthetic active liquid crystal, energized by an acoustic field, is presented. This system exhibits active nematic behavior, tunable topological defect dynamics, and persistent hydrodynamic vortices at high activity levels. The material maintains stable properties while enabling precise activity control in a wide range.

Influence on extracted complex refractive index from phase inaccuracy of reflection-type THz-time-domain spectroscopy [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv
Reflection-type terahertz (THz) time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) enables the measurement of optical properties of opaque samples in the THz frequency range, e.g., carrier density and mobility. In this study, we examine the influence of phase inaccuracy on the extracted complex refractive index from reflection-type THz-TDS.

Efficient Autonomous Dew Water Harvesting by Laser Micropatterning: Superhydrophilic and High Emissivity Robust Grooved Metallic Surfaces Enabling Filmwise Condensation and Radiative Cooling

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Laser micropatterning is presented as a promising technology in the search for autonomous dew water harvesting materials. Laser‐grooved metallic surfaces achieve simultaneously high infrared emissivity and superhydrophilicity, which gives them self‐cooling properties under atmospheric radiative deficit and the ability to condense water in an efficient ...
