Sensor for refractive index variation of an optical surface using a high-refractive-index waveguide
Optical Engineering, 2007We describe the design of a waveguide Fabry-Perot optical sensor with high sensitivity to surface refractive index change. The optical thickness and field can be accommodated in a high-refractive-index waveguide, leading to a high sensitivity. Incorporating the resonance structure further enhances the sensitivity.

Optical Fiber Sensor for Measuring Refractive Index
Japanese Journal of Applied Physics, 1982An optical fiber sensor for measuring a liquid refractive index is proposed. When an optical fiber is bent and part of its cladding is stripped off, the light energy (E) emerging from the fiber depends on the refractive index of the surrounding medium (n m). The change in n m can be found from E.

In-Line Fabry–Pérot Refractive Index Sensor
IEEE Photonics Technology Letters, 2011An in-line intrinsic Fabry-Perot refractive index (RI) sensor is demonstrated. The sensor consists of a short single-mode fiber (SMF) section with removed cladding that is fusion spliced between two lead fibers containing in-fiber mirrors. The measured medium surrounding the decladed fiber section affects the fundamental mode's effective index and ...

A Refractive Index Sensor Based on the Tapering Theory
IEEE Sensors Journal, 2016A refractive index (RI) sensor has been realized to measure RI, hardly affected by temperature. A fused biconical taper machine is used to receive two same diameter tapers, which are cascaded by a fusion splicer. This paper studies the spectral characteristics of the RI sensor with a different bending angle in tapers, and finds that with the increase ...

Fiber Laser-Based Refractive Index Sensor
Optical Fiber Sensors, 2006A fiber laser-based refractive index sensor is presented. The refractive index was measured by monitoring the delay time of the lasing from the pump excitation time. High refractive index sensitivity of 10-6 can be obtained.

A Refractive Index Sensor Based on Microinterferometric Backscatter
2011Refractive index (RI) detection is a common technique used in chemical and biochemical analysis. Rapid monitoring and refractive detection of ultra small volume samples are in great demand. However, it is still a significant challenge for highly precise and miniature detectors to measure ultra small volume samples.
