Moving in the Dark: Enlightening the Spatial Population Ecology of European Cave Salamanders

open access: yesPopulation Ecology, EarlyView.
We assessed individual interactions, movement ecology and activity patterns of a subterranean population of Speleomantes strinatii, applying spatial capture–recapture modeling to a photographic dataset of 104 individuals. ABSTRACT Space use and movement are fundamental aspects of organisms' ecology, mirroring individual fitness, behavior, and life ...

A Novel High Sensitivity Refractive Index Sensor Based on Multi-Core Micro/Nano Fiber

open access: yesPhotonic Sensors, 2019
A refractive index sensor based on a multi-core micro/nano fiber is proposed for low refractive index solutions. At first, the mode field distribution of the tapered multi-core fiber is analyzed with the finite element model (FEM).

Refractive index sensor based on slot waveguide cavity

open access: yesJournal of the European Optical Society-Rapid Publications, 2012
The experimental study of a gold slot waveguide cavity is presented. The resonance of this cavity working in the telecom wavelength range is highly dependent on the refractive index of the medium located in or around the slots array, because of the high confinement of the electromagnetic field in the structure.

B cell mechanobiology in health and disease: emerging techniques and insights into therapeutic responses

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
B cells sense external mechanical forces and convert them into biochemical signals through mechanotransduction. Understanding how malignant B cells respond to physical stimuli represents a groundbreaking area of research. This review examines the key mechano‐related molecules and pathways in B lymphocytes, highlights the most relevant techniques to ...

Photonic crystal fiber half-taper probe based refractometer [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
A compact singlemode - photonic crystal fiber - singlemode fiber tip (SPST) refractive index sensor is demonstrated in this paper. A CO2 laser cleaving technique is utilised to provide a clean-cut fiber tip which is then coated by a layer of gold to ...

The Determination of the Sensitivity of Refractive Index Sensors

open access: yesPhotonics
A new approach to determining the sensitivity of refractive index sensors is proposed. It has been shown that relative and absolute sensitivity show different results, and also, for the first time, it is demonstrated that relative sensitivity has advantages over absolute sensitivity. In addition, the influence of the relative width of the photonic band
