Rainforest Fragmentation Decreases the Robustness of Plant‐Frugivore Interaction Networks

open access: yesBiotropica, Volume 57, Issue 4, July 2025.
Our study in northern Costa Rica found that larger forest fragments and greater forest cover boost frugivore species richness and strengthen the modularity and robustness of plant–frugivore networks, with three tanager species serving as key species. Consequently, conserving these species and maintaining larger, contiguous forest areas is essential for

Fast‐risky versus slow‐safe life histories mediate resprouting among Caribbean tropical dry forest trees

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, Volume 39, Issue 6, Page 1579-1593, June 2025.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Under climate change, shifting disturbance regimes necessitate understanding the linkages between biomass regeneration and plant function to assess forest resilience.

Successional Growth Dynamics of Woody Saplings in Tropical Dry Forest Understory

open access: yesBiotropica, Volume 57, Issue 3, May 2025.
The factors that drive sapling growth in tropical dry forest succession remain unclear. Growth rates are higher in the early stages of succession and then decrease. Light and not water seems to be the main factor limiting sapling growth along succession. The successional guild of species and the taxonomic identity as a Leguminosae were the main factors

Sample coverage affects diversity measures of bird communities along a natural recovery gradient of abandoned agriculture in tropical lowland forests

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 62, Issue 3, Page 480-491, March 2025.
Our results highlight the importance of standardizing biodiversity measures and incorporating beta diversity in biodiversity monitoring. We demonstrate that taxonomic, phylogenetic and functional bird diversity can be high in secondary forests within smallholder agricultural landscapes.

Understanding Alzheimer’s Disease Through Neurodevelopment: Insights from Human Cerebral Organoids

open access: yesOrganoids
Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder and the leading cause of dementia, for which there is currently no cure. The causes of AD are still not well understood, although 5% of cases are known to have a genetic origin ...

The need for carbon finance schemes to tackle overexploitation of tropical forest wildlife

open access: yesConservation Biology, Volume 39, Issue 1, February 2025.
Abstract Defaunation of tropical forests, particularly from unsustainable hunting, has diminished populations of key seed dispersers for many tree species, driving shifts in forest community composition toward small‐fruited or wind‐dispersed trees with low wood density. Such shifts can reduce aboveground biomass, prompting calls for overexploitation to
