Psychological Deficit Reduction in Schizophrenia through Response-Contingent Noxious Reinforcement

A review is presented of a number of studies with schizophrenics in which noxious and positive reinforcements have been employed. The results of these studies indicate that the greatest degree of performance facilitation among schizophrenics occurs under conditions of response-contingent noxious reinforcement.

Apparently reinforcement modifies learning indirectly by determining the activities in which the learning process occurs. As indicated by the responses of 432 Ss enrolled in general psychology, explanatory reinforcement was superior to non-explanatory reinforcement in the learning of concepts.
