Therapeutic Apheresis for Intravenous Methylprednisolone‐Refractory Neuromyelitis Optica Spectrum Disorder: Clinical and Radiological Outcomes in a Single‐Center Case Series

open access: yesTherapeutic Apheresis and Dialysis, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) is a relapsing autoimmune disease of the central nervous system. High‐dose intravenous methylprednisolone (IVMP) is the standard first‐line therapy for acute attacks, although some patients remain refractory.

Methods of increasing amount of pressure-relief gas of protective layer

open access: yesGong-kuang zidonghua, 2016
According to gas radial flow theory and energy conservation law, gas drainage model and flow network using surface drilling were established, and method of increasing amount of pressure-relief gas of protective layer by increasing resistance of the ...

Effects of the Fluid Replacement Method During Online Hemodiafiltration on the Solute Removal Performance and Biocompatibility Using the Asymmetric Cellulose Triacetate Membrane

open access: yesTherapeutic Apheresis and Dialysis, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Introduction Pre‐dilution online hemodiafiltration (Pre‐HDF) is predominantly used in Japan, whereas post‐dilution online HDF (Post‐HDF) is more common in Europe. An asymmetric cellulose triacetate (ATA) membrane may improve biocompatibility.

Theory of Change Review: A Report Commissioned by Comic Relief [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Comic Relief does three things. It raises much needed cash, it then allocates that cash to projects in the United States and in the poorest countries in the world, and it raises awareness of the issues it feels strongly about.

Barriers to vehicle-sharing among NGOs during disaster relief operations: Findings from a developing country's perspective [PDF]

open access: yes, 2023
NGOs (Non-governmental Organizations) are still lagging in adopting the benefits of vehicle-sharing during disaster relief operations. Therefore, the primary objective of this investigation is to scrutinize the impediments that impede the cooperative ...

The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.

The influence of logistics preparedness on resilient disaster relief operations: evidence from disaster relief operations practitioners in humanitarian organizations in Tanzania

open access: yesInternational Business Logistics Journal
The research investigated the influence of logistics preparedness on resilient disaster relief operations in Tanzania. This study involved testing the alternative hypothesis: logistics preparedness has positive significant influence on resilient disaster

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

A BI-OBJECTIVE MEDICAL RELIEF SHELTER LOCATION PROBLEM CONSIDERING COVERAGE RATIOS

open access: yes, 2021
Under disaster circumstances, people in the impacted areas need different levels of medical services provided by the temporary or existing medical relief shelters whose medical service capability should be equal to or greater than their needs.

Reconstructing enzyme evolution by protein engineering

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Natural enzyme evolution can be retraced by protein engineering methods such as directed evolution, rational design, and ancestral sequence reconstruction. These approaches reveal how enzymes emerged from ligand‐binding scaffolds, developed varying substrate preferences, formed oligomeric complexes, adapted to environmental changes, and evolved novel ...
