Intravenous methadone for pain management in cardiac surgery: a randomised controlled trial with plasma concentration analysis*

open access: yesAnaesthesia, EarlyView.
Summary Introduction Postoperative pain after cardiac surgery remains significant despite the administration of opioids. Methadone may improve pain control and decrease the need for postoperative opioids. Randomised controlled trials, however, are limited and the effects of cardiopulmonary bypass on methadone pharmacokinetics are unclear.

Sample entropy analysis of EEG signals via artificial neural networks to model patients' consciousness level based on anesthesiologists experience. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Electroencephalogram (EEG) signals, as it can express the human brain's activities and reflect awareness, have been widely used in many research and medical equipment to build a noninvasive monitoring index to the depth of anesthesia (DOA).

Remifentanil use in critically Ill patients requiring mechanical ventilation is associated with increased delirium-free days: a retrospective study

open access: yesInternational Journal of Emergency Medicine
Intraoperative remifentanil reduces postoperative delirium incidence, unlike other opioids; however, its efficacy in medical emergencies with organ failure is unknown.

Effect of remifentanil on mitochondrial oxygen consumption of cultured human hepatocytes. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2012
During sepsis, liver dysfunction is common, and failure of mitochondria to effectively couple oxygen consumption with energy production has been described.

Effect of peri‐operative pharmacological interventions on postoperative delirium in patients having cardiac surgery: a systematic review and Bayesian network meta‐analysis

open access: yesAnaesthesia, EarlyView.
Summary Introduction Postoperative delirium is a common complication following cardiac surgery. Despite its known impact on patient outcomes, effective preventative strategies remain elusive. We aimed to perform a comprehensive Bayesian network meta‐analysis of randomised controlled trials assessing the effect of pharmacological interventions on the ...

Gradual withdrawal of remifentanil delays initial post-operative analgesic demand after thyroid surgery; double-blinded, randomized controlled trial

open access: yesBMC Anesthesiology, 2019
Background Mismanagement of remifentanil leads to severe side effects such as opioid-induced tolerance and hyperalgesia. Recently studies revealed an alternative withdrawal method to limit these side effects. A gradual withdrawal of remifentanil seems to

Postoperative sore throat: a systematic review*

open access: yesAnaesthesia, EarlyView.
Summary Introduction Postoperative sore throat is a common complaint with an incidence of up to 62%. While anaesthetists often perceive this as a minor and self‐limiting complication, postoperative sore throat is one of the leading causes of postoperative anaesthesia‐related discomfort.

Procedural sedation and analgesia versus general anesthesia for hysteroscopic myomectomy: A cost‐effectiveness analysis alongside a randomized controlled trial

open access: yesActa Obstetricia et Gynecologica Scandinavica, EarlyView.
Data on cost‐effectiveness of procedural sedation and analgesia for hysteroscopic myomectomy was lacking. Procedural sedation and analgesia for hysteroscopic myomectomy in an outpatient setting is cost‐effective compared to general anesthesia in an operating room. It should be considered to perform hysteroscopic myomectomy in an outpatient setting with

Remifentanil and tramadol

open access: yesBritish Journal of Anaesthesia, 1998
The lack of analgesic efficacy limits tramadol as a sole agent to treat severe pain after surgery. However, it has a relative lack of respiratory depressant and constipating effects compared with morphine and codeine, and does not share the propensity of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs to provoke asthma, gastrointestinal mucosal damage and renal ...
