Translational Considerations for Injectable Biomaterials and Bioscaffolds to Repair and Regenerate Brain Tissue

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
The repair and regeneration of brain tissue faces both biological and technical challenges. Injectable bioscaffolds offer new opportunities to stimulate tissue regrowth in the brain by recruiting neural stem cells. Here, the translational issues are reviewed that need to be address to advance this promising new therapeutic approach from the bench to ...

Transseptal puncture via a superior access as an alternative to the conventional femoral route

open access: yesInternational Journal of Cardiology Congenital Heart Disease, 2021
Introduction: Congenital heart disease (CHD) patients represent a challenge for ablation procedures and may require unusual procedural techniques. An example is the absence of femoral venous accesses that makes a conventional TSP approach impossible ...

Rapid Fabrication of Self‐Propelled and Steerable Magnetic Microcatheters for Precision Medicine

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
A rapid Joule heating fabrication method for the production of self‐propelling, adaptive microcatheters, with tunable stiffness and integrated microfluidic channels is presented. Demonstrated through three microrobotic designs, including a steerable guiding catheter, an untethered wave‐crawling TubeBot, and a distal‐end propelled microcatheter, it was ...

Remote magnetic catheter navigation: more than just bells and whistles ? [PDF]

open access: yesNetherlands Heart Journal, 2013
Catheter ablation is nowadays an established treatment modality for both atrial and ventricular tachyarrhythmias. Manual navigation of the ablation catheter can be challenging in patients with a complex cardiac anatomy due to, for example, (surgically corrected or palliated) congenital heart defects, resulting in a long procedure time and excessive X ...

Elastomeric Micro‐Balloons for Remote Control of Cerebral Blood Flow and Real‐Time In vivo Imaging of Rodent Brain Response to Hypoperfusion

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
This study reports the fabrication of MRI‐compatible elastomeric micro‐balloons via a multi‐step bubble casting process, where the monolithic elastomeric wall is selectively stiffened for reversible and controlled inflation and elasticity, depending on the target vessels for graded occlusion of cerebral arteries.

Magnetically Actuated Drops‐on‐Stilts Microrobots for Transport and Delivery of Hydrophobic Cargo

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, EarlyView.
Iron oxide nanoparticles and oil droplets in external magnetic fields form “drops‐on‐stilts” microrobots that transport hydrophobic cargo. Tunable nanoparticle–droplet interactions generate stilt‐like structures. Field rotation enables walking, obstacle navigation, and collective motion.
