Meniscal Repair—Outside-In Repair
Clinics in Sports Medicine, 2012In 1948, Fairbank described the radiographic changes that develop after meniscecomy, suggesting the protective effect of the meniscus. Early biomechanical studies ave further defined the importance of the meniscus in normal knee joint function. hese studies found a 50% to 70% reduction in femoral condyle contact, a 100% ncrease in contact stress with ...

Historically, treatment of meniscus tears consisted of complete meniscectomy. Over the past few decades, however, the long-term morbidities of meniscal removal, namely the early development of knee osteoarthritis, have become apparent. Thus, management of meniscal tears has trended toward meniscal preservation.

Acquired blepharoptosis presents as both a functional and cosmetic problem commonly encountered by facial plastic surgeons. Ptosis repair can be both challenging and frustrating, especially given ever-increasing demands for an optimal cosmetic surgical result.

When we began our association for the purpose of treating hypospadias in the early 1950s we used a tube graft of full thickness skin in a 1-stage procedure. We have made modifications to improve the appearance of the glans and now use 1 of 4 procedures, dependent on the location of the urethral meatus.

Management of microtia can be one of the most rewarding yet humbling challenges faced by the reconstructive surgeon. The preferred method of total auricular reconstruction is with autologous cartilage and skin, based on modifications of the methods of Tanzer and Brent.

A prospective study of repair of longitudinal, peripheral, and posterior horn meniscus tears was carried out in 50 patients. The mean length of follow-up was 5 year. Forty-eight of the patients were symptom-free and post-repair arthroscopic examination confirmed that the repaired menisci have healed satisfactorily.

Transplantation of fetal neural cells represents an attractive replacement strategy for the treatment of certain neurodegenerative diseases. This is the case with Parkinson's disease, which results from a selective loss of dopaminergic neurons of the substantia nigra. Experimentation with animal models has demonstrated the feasibility of this approach.
