Firearm sexual homicide offenders: Criminal careers, psychopathology, and offense conduct

open access: yesJournal of Forensic Sciences, EarlyView.
Abstract Most homicides are firearm‐perpetrated, but in sexual homicide, offenders are more likely to utilize personal weapons (e.g., hands and feet), contact weapons (e.g., blunt object), or edged weapons (e.g., knife) to comport with their fantasy life, motivational states, and psychopathology.

Effects of bleach on carcass postmortem microbiomes and necrophagous beetle carcass attendance and their internal microbiomes

open access: yesJournal of Forensic Sciences, EarlyView.
Abstract Forensic entomology, and potentially microbiology in the future, can be used during death investigations to corroborate an estimated time since death. Instances where products are introduced to a cadaver, either in attempt to conceal or by accident, can affect decomposition and succession of associated decomposer taxa (i.e., insects and ...

Brood parasitism reduces but does not prevent Bombus terrestris reproductive success

open access: yesInsect Science, EarlyView.
Graphical depiction of the colony splitting process. Throughout figures in this paper, results pertaining to host success are represented in blue, and cuckoo success is represented in red. Abstract Cuckoo bumblebees are obligate brood parasites that must invade a colony of their host bumblebee species in order to reproduce.

The Australian Hydromyine Rodents—Their Interspecific Diversity and Reproductive Biology: A Review

open access: yesIntegrative Zoology, EarlyView.
There are two major groups, the Rattus species and the Hydromyini, in Australia. Clearly, the hydromyine rodents, unlike the Rattus genus, exhibit a diverse array of reproductive biological traits in both males and females, the full evolutionary significance of which has yet to be ascertained.

Volatile Compounds in Feathers of the Scarlet Macaw (Ara macao) Reflect Sex and Pair‐Bond Status

open access: yesIntegrative Zoology, EarlyView.
Scarlet macaws exhibit sex‐ and pair‐related differences in plumage volatile composition, with males showing greater chemical richness. Partnered individuals differ in specific compound classes, whereas no clear association with immune function was detected. These results support a potential role for olfactory cues in sexual and social communication in

Downstream Passage Performance of European Silver Eels (Anguilla anguilla): The Importance of Phenotypic Variation and Rack Design

open access: yesAnimal Conservation, EarlyView.
During their spawning migration, European silver eels frequently encounter hydropower facilities where successful downstream passage is essential for the conservation of this critically endangered species. In this study, we evaluated how three angled rack designs and individual behavioral variation influenced downstream passage success in large‐scale ...
