The small protein CydX is required for function of cytochrome bd oxidase in Brucella abortus. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
A large number of hypothetical genes potentially encoding small proteins of unknown function are annotated in the Brucella abortus genome. Individual deletion of 30 of these genes identified four mutants, in BAB1_0355, BAB2_0726, BAB2_0470, and BAB2_0450

Device for the comparison of replica plates [PDF]

open access: yesApplied Microbiology, 1968
one plate on top of the other. However, the thickness of the petri plates introduces a problem of parallax, in which the bulk of the growth on the lower plate can be seen by the observer in spite of corresponding colonies on the upper plate. In only that portion of the growth pattern which is directly perpendicular to the viewer's line of sight do the ...

Polymicrobial infections: Do bacteria behave differently depending on their neighbours?

open access: yesVirulence, 2018
Despite the number of examples that correlate interspecies interactions in polymicrobial infections with variations in pathogenicity and antibiotic susceptibility of individual organisms, antibiotic therapies are selected to target the most relevant ...

PREVALENCE OF ANTIBIOTIC RESISTANT STRAINS OF ESCHERICHIA COLI AND ENTEROCOCCUS SPP. IN ROE DEER (CAPREOLUS CAPREOLUS) AND RED DEER (CERVUS ELAPHUS) AT THE PARCO NAZIONALE DEI MONTI SIBILLINI, ITALY

open access: yesItalian Journal of Food Safety, 2009
A case control study was performed in the Parco Nazionale dei Monti Sibillini, Italy, to find out whether roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) and red deer (Cervus elaphus) were more likely to harbour antibiotic resistant Escherichia coli in their faeces ...

Plasmid transformation and replica filter plating of Acholeplasma laidlawii [PDF]

open access: yesFEMS Microbiology Letters, 1990
The restriction deficient mutant 8195 of Acholeplasma laidlawii strain JA1 was transformed by the promiscuous streptococcal plasmid vector pNZ18 at a frequency of 4 x 10(-4)/cfu. The plasmid was maintained without structural rearrangements but was lost in the absence of a selection pressure, i.e. kanamycin or neomycin. Transformed primary colonies were

Genetic diversity of Staphylococcus aureus in Buruli ulcer.

open access: yesPLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases, 2015
BackgroundBuruli ulcer (BU) is a necrotizing skin disease caused by Mycobacterium ulcerans. Previous studies have shown that wounds of BU patients are colonized with M. ulcerans and several other microorganisms, including Staphylococcus aureus, which may

Senescence in vitro and ionising radiations—the human diploid fibroblast model [PDF]

open access: yes, 1981
The influence of ionising radiations on ageing is still controversial. Since Hayflick established the concept that diploid cells have finite lifespan in vitro, human diploid fibroblast (HDF) cultures have been recognised as a potent experimental model ...

An upstream open reading frame regulates expression of the mitochondrial protein Slm35 and mitophagy flux

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals how the mitochondrial protein Slm35 is regulated in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The authors identify stress‐responsive DNA elements and two upstream open reading frames (uORFs) in the 5′ untranslated region of SLM35. One uORF restricts translation, and its mutation increases Slm35 protein levels and mitophagy.
