Modeling and replicating statistical topology and evidence for CMB nonhomogeneity [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, 2017
SignificanceUnder the general heading of “topological data analysis” (TDA), the recent adoption of topological methods for the analysis of large, complex, and high-dimensional data sets has established that the abstract concepts of algebraic topology provide powerful tools for data analysis. However, despite the successes of TDA, most applications have

Taurine promotes glucagon‐like peptide‐1 secretion in enteroendocrine L cells

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Taurine, a sulfur‐containing amino acid, is likely taken up by enteroendocrine L cells via the taurine transporter. This process increases the levels of cytosolic ATP. The increase in intracellular Ca2+ concentrations and glucagon‐like peptide‐1 secretion through membrane depolarization is caused by the closure of ATP‐sensitive potassium channels ...

Statistics as a Social Activity: Attitudes toward Amalgamating Evidence

open access: yesEntropy
Amalgamation of evidence in statistics is conducted in several ways. Within a study, multiple observations are combined by averaging, or as factors in a likelihood or prediction algorithm.

Identifying Statistical Bias in Dataset Replication

open access: yes, 2020
Dataset replication is a useful tool for assessing whether improvements in test accuracy on a specific benchmark correspond to improvements in models' ability to generalize reliably. In this work, we present unintuitive yet significant ways in which standard approaches to dataset replication introduce statistical bias, skewing the resulting ...

The Saccharomyces cerevisiae amino acid transporter Lyp1 has a broad substrate spectrum

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Yeast Amino acid Transporter family members mediate the import of amino acids, ranging from substrate specialists to generalists. Here, we show that the specialist transporter, Lyp1, has a broader substrate spectrum than previously described, with affinity constants spanning from micromolar to millimolar.

A comparative study of circulating tumor cell isolation and enumeration technologies in lung cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Lung cancer cells were spiked into donor blood to evaluate the recovery rates of the following circulating tumor cell (CTC) enrichment technologies: CellMag™, EasySep™, RosetteSep™, Parsortix® PR1, and Parsortix® Prototype systems. Each method's advantages and disadvantages are described.

RHPMAN: Replication in Highly Partitioned Mobile Ad Hoc Networks

open access: yesInternational Journal of Distributed Sensor Networks, 2014
Accessing data in mobile ad hoc networks is a challenging problem, which is caused by frequent network partitions due to node mobility and due to the impairments of wireless communications.

Cellular liquid biopsy provides unique chances for disease monitoring, preclinical model generation and therapy adjustment in rare salivary gland cancer patients

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
We quantified and cultured circulating tumor cells (CTCs) of 62 patients with various cancer types and generated CTC‐derived tumoroid models from two salivary gland cancer patients. Cellular liquid biopsy‐derived information enabled molecular genetic assessment of systemic disease heterogeneity and functional testing for therapy selection in both ...

The Influence of PBL Model on Student Learning Outcomes in the Form Changes Concept of Substances

open access: yesJurnal Pijar MIPA (Pengkajian Ilmu dan Pengajaran Matematika dan Ilmu Pengetahuan Alam)
The problem-based learning (PBL) model is the learning model that prepares students to think critically and analytically. This study investigates the effect of the PBL model on students' academic performance related to the form changes concept of ...

Bayesian sample size determination for multi-site replication studies [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2023
An ongoing "reproducibility crisis" calls into question scientific discoveries across a variety of disciplines ranging from life to social sciences. Replication studies aim to investigate the validity of findings in published research, and try to assess whether the latter are statistically consistent with those in the replications.
