Reproducibility in Learning [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2022
We introduce the notion of a reproducible algorithm in the context of learning. A reproducible learning algorithm is resilient to variations in its samples -- with high probability, it returns the exact same output when run on two samples from the same underlying distribution.

The Fundamental Principles of Reproducibility [PDF]

open access: yesPhilosophical Transactions of the Royal Society A: Mathematical, Physical and Engineering Sciences, 2020
Reproducibility is a confused terminology. In this paper, I take a fundamental view on reproducibility rooted in the scientific method. The scientific method is analysed and characterised in order to develop the terminology required to define reproducibility.

Leakage and the Reproducibility Crisis in ML-based Science [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv.org, 2022
The use of machine learning (ML) methods for prediction and forecasting has become widespread across the quantitative sciences. However, there are many known methodological pitfalls, including data leakage, in ML-based science.

Replication study: androgen receptor splice variants determine taxane sensitivity in prostate cancer [PDF]

open access: yesPeerJ, 2018
In 2015, as part of the Prostate Cancer Foundation–Movember Foundation Reproducibility Initiative, we published a Registered Report (Shan et al., 2015) that described how we intended to replicate selected experiments from the paper “Androgen Receptor ...

Why are Some Bugs Non-Reproducible? An Empirical Investigation using Data Fusion [PDF]

open access: yes2020 IEEE International Conference on Software Maintenance and Evolution (ICSME), 2021
Software developers attempt to reproduce software bugs to understand their erroneous behaviours and to fix them. Unfortunately, they often fail to reproduce (or fix) them, which leads to faulty, unreliable software systems. However, to date, only a little research has been done to better understand what makes the software bugs non-reproducible. In this

TorchMetrics - Measuring Reproducibility in PyTorch

open access: yesJournal of Open Source Software, 2022
A main problem with reproducing machine learning publications is the variance of metric implementations across papers. A lack of standardization leads to different behavior in mechanisms such as checkpointing, learning rate schedulers or early stopping ...
