Repurposing Antipsychotics for Cancer Treatment

open access: yesBiomedicines, 2021
Cancer is a leading cause of death worldwide, with approximately 19 million new cases each year. Lately, several novel chemotherapeutic drugs have been introduced, efficiently inhibiting tumor growth and proliferation. However, developing a new drug is a

The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.

The emergence of resistance to the antiparasitic selamectin in Mycobacterium smegmatis is improbable and contingent on cell wall integrity

open access: yesMicrobiology Spectrum
Tuberculosis remains the deadliest infectious disease of the 21st century. New antimicrobials are needed to improve treatment outcomes and enable therapy shortening. Drug repurposing is an alternative to the traditional drug discovery process.

Repurposing the KCa3.1 inhibitor senicapoc for Alzheimer's disease. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
ObjectiveMicroglia play a pivotal role in the initiation and progression of Alzheimer's disease (AD). We here tested the therapeutic hypothesis that the Ca2+-activated potassium channel KCa3.1 constitutes a potential target for treating AD by reducing ...

Structural biology of ferritin nanocages

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Ferritin is a conserved iron‐storage protein that sequesters iron as a ferric mineral core within a nanocage, protecting cells from oxidative damage and maintaining iron homeostasis. This review discusses ferritin biology, structure, and function, and highlights recent cryo‐EM studies revealing mechanisms of ferritinophagy, cellular iron uptake, and ...

Repurposing Second-Life EV Batteries to Advance Sustainable Development: A Comprehensive Review

open access: yesBatteries
While lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have pushed the progression of electric vehicles (EVs) as a viable commercial option, they introduce their own set of issues regarding sustainable development.

Adaptaquin is selectively toxic to glioma stem cells through disruption of iron and cholesterol metabolism

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Adaptaquin selectively kills glioma stem cells while sparing differentiated brain cells. Transcriptomic and proteomic analyses show Adaptaquin disrupts iron and cholesterol homeostasis, with iron chelation amplifying cytotoxicity via cholesterol depletion, mitochondrial dysfunction, and elevated reactive oxygen species.
