Construction of an O2‐responsive engineering bioreactor for enhanced indole‐3‐propionic acid production and deoxynivalenol detoxification

open access: yesResponsive Materials, EarlyView.
An oxygen‐responsive living bioreactor was engineered via interspecies protoplast fusion, converting oxygen from an inhibitory stress into a programmable signal for sustained indole‐3‐propionic acid (IPA) production. This genetically encoded bioreactor enables robust aerobic operation and therapeutic efficacy of deoxynivalenol detoxification in vivo ...

Real-time in situ viability assessment in a 3D bioreactor with liver cells using resazurin assay.

open access: yes, 2013
peer reviewedThree-dimensional cultivation of human cells is promising especially for long-term maintenance of specific functions and mimicking the in vivo tissue environment.

Dual pharmacological targeting of coactivator‐associated arginine methyltransferase 1 (CARM1) and salt inducible kinase (SIK) drives ketogenesis in both hepatocytes and mice

open access: yesBritish Journal of Pharmacology, EarlyView.
Abstract Background and Purpose Ketone bodies are liver‐derived circulating energy metabolites that positively impact most hallmarks of ageing. Ketone bodies increase during calorie restriction and fasting, two of the more widely perceived methods to increase health span.

Evaluation of synergy between host and pathogen-directed therapies against intracellular Leishmania donovani

open access: yesInternational Journal for Parasitology: Drugs and Drug Resistance, 2019
Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is associated with treatment complications due to the continued growth of resistant parasites toward currently available pathogen-directed therapeutics.

Co‐Culture of Mammalian Cells and Photosynthetic Microorganisms for Oxygen Supply in Engineered Tissues

open access: yesCell Proliferation, EarlyView.
Continuous 28‐day light exposure alters behaviours of articular cartilage progenitor cells (ACPCs) and mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs). Co‐culture with Leptolyngbya and Synechococcus does not adversely affect the chondrogenic capacity of ACPCs over a 28‐day period, in contrast to co‐culture with Chlorella.

Accelerated electrochemical antibiotic susceptibility testing using disposable electrodes and Resazurin

open access: yes
Stenotrophomonas maltophilia and Shigella sonnei are increasingly associated with serious infections and shigellosis, respectively, with conventional antibiotic susceptibility tests requiring 18–24 h or more, often delaying treatment.

Targeted, receptor‐mediated delivery of a masked d‐amino acid cell‐penetrating peptide for cell‐specific phototoxicity

open access: yesThe FEBS Journal, EarlyView.
A targeted phototoxic peptide selectively accumulates in cells expressing chemokine‐like receptor 1 (CMKLR1). Phototoxicity of the native peptide is low, but cleavage by lysosomal protease cathepsin B releases a 6‐tetramethylrhodamine (TMR) labeled nona‐ᴅ‐arginine which mediates lysosomal rupture and cell death upon irradiation.

Adsorption of resazurin by poly(acrylic acid) hydrogels and evaluation of its use in reduction assay for quantification of cell viability

open access: yes, 2020
WOS:000603542900006Resazurin is a nonfluorescent blue dye which is reduced to a fluorescent pink resorufin via enzymatic activity of living cells. Therefore, a resazurin reduction-based assay serves as an effective method for evaluating cell viability ...

Physiological media and oxygen levels modulate cancer hallmarks in cultured breast cancer cells

open access: yesThe FEBS Journal, EarlyView.
MCF7 breast cancer cells were cultured in standard conditions (18% O2 and DMEM) and physiological conditions (5% O2 and Plasmax, a medium modeled after the human plasma metabolome). A combined transcriptomic and proteomic approach was used to identify gene expression signatures at the mRNA and protein levels upstream of functional enrichment analyses ...

An Investigation of the Interaction between Resazurin and Cd2+ and Zn2+ Ions in Aqueous Medium

open access: yes, 2010
The voltammetric behaviour of resazurin in the presence of Cd2+ and Zn2+ ions at a hanging mercury drop electrode (HMDE) was investigated by using square wave voltammetry (SWV), cyclic voltammetry (CV) and adsorptive square wave voltammetry (AdsSWV). The
