Problems of methodology and explanation in word order universals research [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Ever since the publication of Greenberg 1963, word order typologists have attempted to formulate and refine implicational universals of word order so as to characterize the restricted distribution of certain word order patterns, and in some cases have ...

Inhibiting stearoyl‐CoA desaturase suppresses bone metastatic prostate cancer by modulating cellular stress, mTOR signaling, and DNA damage response

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Bone metastasis in prostate cancer (PCa) patients is a clinical hurdle due to the poor understanding of the supportive bone microenvironment. Here, we identify stearoyl‐CoA desaturase (SCD) as a tumor‐promoting enzyme and potential therapeutic target in bone metastatic PCa.

Beriberi disease – a picture of thiamine deficiency in underdeveloped and highly developed countries

open access: yesJournal of Education, Health and Sport, 2020
Introduction and purpose: Thiamin (Vitamin B1) is a water-soluble vitamin. It plays an important role in many biological processes, mainly in glucose metabolism. Its deficiency is called beriberi disease.

Transferrin receptor 1‐mediated iron uptake supports thermogenic activation in human cervical‐derived adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this study, we found that human cervical‐derived adipocytes maintain intracellular iron level by regulating the expression of iron transport‐related proteins during adrenergic stimulation. Melanotransferrin is predicted to interact with transferrin receptor 1 based on in silico analysis.

Unclear etiology and current hypotheses of the pathogenesis of fibromyalgia

open access: yesJournal of Education, Health and Sport, 2020
Introduction and purpose: Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition affecting almost 2% of the general population, mostly women. The main symptoms are chronic diffuse musculoskeletal pain or stiffness, tiredness,  nonrestorative sleep, anxiety, depression and ...

The planar cell polarity protein Vangl2 interacts with the PDZ‐domains of Scribble but not with a unique PDZ‐like domain in Inturned

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Structural and biochemical characterisations show that the planar cell polarity (PCP) protein Inturned harbours a unique PDZ‐like domain that does not bind canonical PDZ‐binding motifs (PBMs) like that of another PCP protein Vangl2. In contrast, the apical‐basal polarity protein Scribble contains four PDZ domains that bind Vangl2, but one PDZ domain ...

Conditional Power and Model Selection Based Sample Size Reestimation with Type I Error Recalibration

open access: yesEpidemiology, Biostatistics and Public Health
Introduction The sample size estimation at study design depends on initial assumptions regarding the target power, treatment effect, accrual/follow-up duration and the underlying exponential distribution for time-to-event outcomes.

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

Exploring the IT usage in SMEs from New Zealand, Columbia and Chile using action-research methodology [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
The theory on the adoption and use of information technology (IT) in small and medium enterprises (SMEs) is abundant. However, methodologically speaking, action-research (AR) has been little explored as a method of construction of this theory, despite ...
