Damage Resistance Tests of Materials
2014Experimental tests discussed in this chapter refer to those chemical and mechanical analyses of materials involved in a failed element. In this context, we call material to each part of the component suspected to possess particular properties that may have influenced the failure mechanism.

Molecular mechanisms of resistance to heat and oxidative damage
Journal of Applied Bacteriology, 1994Spore heat resistance can be predicted within reasonable limits from knowledge of optimal growth temperature of the sporeformer, the temperature of sporulation, water content of the spore protoplast, cortex size, total mineralization and specific mineralization.

Optical-damage-resistant impurities in lithium niobate
Journal of the Optical Society of America B, 1991Magnesium1-3, zinc4-6 and some other impurities (substituting mainly for the lithium sites) drastically change optical properties of LiNbO3. In particular the value of optical damage (photorefraction) in LiNbO3:Me (Me = Mg,Zn,…) is sharply reduced compared with undoped LiNbO32-6. Similarly Me impurities tend to supress so-called "dark trace” effect4-6 (

A measurement of surface resistance to damage
Wear, 1976Abstract A method of measuring surface resistance to damage is described in which fine hard particles are dropped onto the surface under controlled conditions and the consequent disruption is measured by the change in specular reflection. The theory of the technique is given and demonstrated experimentally.

The Induction of Resistance to Alkylation Damage in Mammalian Cells
1983We are continuously exposed to non-toxic levels of carcinogens both from our environment and from our diet. It would therefore seem important to determine how cells respond to this particular kind of treatment. Some years ago, an attempt to simulate this chronic environmental exposure to mutagens revealed the existence of an inducible antimutagenic DNA

Graded Materials for Resistance to Contact Deformation and Damage
Science, 2001The mechanical response of materials with spatial gradients in composition and structure is of considerable interest in disciplines as diverse as tribology, geology, optoelectronics, biomechanics, fracture mechanics, and nanotechnology. The damage and failure resistance of surfaces to normal and sliding contact or impact can be changed substantially ...

Damage Resistance and Damage Tolerance of Pultruded Composite Sheet Materials
2002The damage resistance of pultruded composites to quasi-static transverse indentation is characterized, and the damage tolerance of transversely indented composites under subsequent compression is assessed. Two specimen thicknesses are investigated. In each case four specimens are transversely indented to failure.
