Wall effects in particle-laden flows [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
The aim of this study is to investigate about the complex phenomenology associated with the interaction of a particle-laden turbulent flow with the slag-covered wall of an entrained-flow gasifier.

The impact of aerosol mixing state on immersion freezing: insights from classical nucleation theory and particle-resolved simulations [PDF]

open access: yesAtmospheric Chemistry and Physics
Immersion freezing, initiated by ice-nucleating particles (INPs) in supercooled aqueous droplets, plays an important role in the formation of ice crystals within clouds.

In vitro and in silico modelling of ROS1‐positive non‐small cell lung cancer reveals fusion‐dependent tyrosine kinase inhibitor responses

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Drug resistance limits treatment success in a subset of lung cancers driven by ROS1 gene alterations. Using patient‐derived cells and computer simulations, we studied three key mutations and how they affect five targeted drugs. The mutations reduced drug effectiveness in different ways by altering protein structure and behavior.

A high-efficiency pseudo-homogeneous model for coupled heat and moisture transfer during ventilation drying of maize grain piles

open access: yesCase Studies in Thermal Engineering
To accurately predict heat and moisture transfer during ventilation drying in maize storage facilities, a computationally efficient pseudo-homogeneous model (PHM) was developed. By incorporating porosity distributions from particle-resolved computational

Measurements and Prediction of Ash Deposition in a Cyclone-Fired Boiler Operating under Variable Load Conditions

open access: yesFluids, 2023
Measurements of ash deposition rates were made between the secondary superheater and reheater sections of a 450 MW cyclone-fired lignite boiler as the operational load varied from 33 to 100%.

The VHL tumor suppressor at the crossroad of protein folding, aggregation, and cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Mutations, environmental stress, and chaperone dysfunction can destabilize pVHL, promoting its conversion from the native folded state into amyloid‐like assemblies. This transition may contribute to protein storage, cell dormancy, survival, and drug resistance.

A Full-Field Crystal Plasticity Study on the Bauschinger Effect Caused by Non-Shearable Particles and Voids in Aluminium Single Crystals

open access: yesMetals
In the present work, the goal is to use two-scale simulations to be incorporated into the full-field open software DAMASK version 2.0.3 crystal plasticity framework, in relation to the Bauschinger effect caused by the composite effect of the presence of ...

A light‐triggered Time‐Resolved X‐ray Solution Scattering (TR‐XSS) workflow with application to protein conformational dynamics

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Time‐resolved X‐ray solution scattering captures how proteins change shape in real time under near‐native conditions. This article presents a practical workflow for light‐triggered TR‐XSS experiments, from data collection to structural refinement. Using a calcium‐transporting membrane protein as an example, the approach can be broadly applied to study ...

Continuity waves in resolved-particle simulations of fluidized beds

open access: yesPhysical Review Fluids, 2017
The results of a fully resolved simulation of up to 2000 spheres suspended in a vertical liquid stream are analyzed by a method based on a truncated Fourier series expansion. It is shown that, in this way, it is possible to identify continuity (or kinematic) waves and to determine their velocity, which is found to closely agree with the theory of one ...
