Parametric Resonances of Columns

2019
This chapter aims to give a general overview of the parametric resonances of columns under a harmonically pulsating force. In addition to simple resonance, combination resonances of sum and difference type are introduced, with columns having various kinds of boundary condition, other than pinned-pinned ends.

Pore Pressure Buildup in Resonant Column Tests

Journal of Geotechnical Engineering, 1984
Resonant column tests were performed on fully saturated and dry hollow cylindrical and fully saturated solid cylindrical specimens of Monterey No. 0 sand of 60% relative density subjected to 96 kPa confining pressure. The hollow specimens were tested by torsional excitation and the solid specimens by longitudinal excitation.

Parametric Resonances of Columns with Damping

2019
This chapter discusses the mathematical aspects of parametric resonances of columns with damping, dealing generally with dynamical systems with damping. In addition to the first-order approximation for the resonance boundaries of Mathieu-Hill equations, an approach to the second-order approximation is suggested.

Resonant Column Testing of Frozen Ottawa Sand

Geotechnical Testing Journal, 1987
Abstract The unique properties of frozen soils have posed special problems for engineers seeking to install stable structures in cold climates. Foundations, pipelines, and other structures subjected to high-frequency low-amplitude vibrations present special problems to the designer even when construction occurs in nonfrozen ground.

Internal Resonances of a Discharge Column

Journal of Applied Physics, 1964
Dipole resonance of a cold plasma column can be predicted quite simply and observed experimentally. It is normally accompanied, however, by a series of subsidiary resonances. These have recently been explained phenomenologically as depending on nonuniform electron density and nonzero electron temperature for their existence.

Resonances in a Cylindrical Plasma Column (Correspondence)

IEEE Transactions on Microwave Theory and Techniques, 1962
A plasma column irradiated by an electromagnetic wave which has its electric vector and direction of propagation perpendicular to the axis of the tube exhibits Tonks-Dattner resonances in its absorption pattern when the electron density in the column is varied.

Resonant-Column Apparatus for Coarse-Grained Materials

Geotechnical Testing Journal, 1985
Abstract To investigate the low-strain dynamic properties of soils with grain size up to 25 mm (1 in.), a resonant column apparatus for specimens of 150 mm (6 in.) diameter and 450 mm (18 in.) height has been developed. Fine-grained materials can be tested using smaller specimens of at least 50 mm (2 in.) diameter.

Periodic Shock Waves in Resonating Gas Columns

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 1960
When an oscillating piston forces the enclosed gas in a Kundt tube to vibrate with a finite amplitude near an acoustic resonance frequency of the gas column, shock waves are generated which travel periodically back and forth in the tube. There is also heating of the gas and a rise in its mean pressure.

The Ultrasonic Interferometer with Resonant Liquid Column

Proceedings of the IRE, 1948
The ultrasonic interferometer is simple in construction and operation, and yields accurate and consistent data. From these data, one can readily determine the velocity of sound in a liquid with high accuracy. Formerly, the absorption of sound in the liquid and the coefficient of reflection at the reflector surface has been obtained through a ...
