Evaluation of Resonant Column Test Devices

Journal of the Geotechnical Engineering Division, 1976
Resonant column tests were performed by six participants in a program designed to evaluate results from various devices. The participants were Drnevich, Hardin, Woods, Shannon & Wilson, Inc., the U.S. Army Engineer Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory, and the U.S. Army Engineer Waterways Experiment Station.

Resonant Column Testing of Frozen Ottawa Sand

Geotechnical Testing Journal, 1987
Abstract The unique properties of frozen soils have posed special problems for engineers seeking to install stable structures in cold climates. Foundations, pipelines, and other structures subjected to high-frequency low-amplitude vibrations present special problems to the designer even when construction occurs in nonfrozen ground.

Resonant Column Tests on Partially Saturated Sands

Geotechnical Testing Journal, 1991
Abstract This paper describes the measurement of the influence of capillary effects on the dynamic shear modulus of partially saturated sands. A Hall-type resonant column apparatus was used to perform the experiments. The materials tested included natural angular and subrounded sands, angular and subrounded sands with specified ...

Evaluation of Linearity of First Mode of Vibration in Resonant Column Testing

Symposium on the Application of Geophysics to Engineering and Environmental Problems 2005, 2005
The shear strain along the height of a specimen in resonant column testing (ASTM D4015-92) is assumed to vary linearly when evaluating its dynamic shear modulus and damping ratio. To examine this assumption, specimens of dry sand, mine tailings, and cemented sand are tested at different confinement and shear strain levels.

Resonant column technique for dynamic testing of cohesive soils

Canadian Geotechnical Journal, 1981
A resonant column apparatus was modified to facilitate dynamic testing of cohesive soils. To alleviate the difficulties caused by air penetration into the confining medium and the sample, a small telescopic plexiglass cell is placed in the main large cell.

Resonant Column Testing: The Inherent Counter EMF Effect

Geotechnical Testing Journal, 2003
Abstract The standard magnet-coil driving system in resonant column devices provides the required cyclic excitation; however, it inherently produces a counter electromotive force that opposes the motion. In this study, the resonant column is modeled as an electro-mechanical system to quantitatively examine the counter electromotive ...

Application of Random Vibration Techniques to Resonant Column Testing

GeoFlorida 2010, 2010
A 152.4 mm (6 in) diameter resonant column device was modified to enable the direct measurement of torsional acceleration transfer functions of samples subjected to random excitation in the small-strain regime. Samples were tested over a wide range of confining pressures. By measuring the rotational acceleration of the end platens, the need to estimate

Evaluation of Effective Soil Density in Resonant Column Tests

IACGE 2013, 2013
This paper presents a theoretical study of effective soil density for small-strain shear wave propagation in saturated soil specimens in resonant column tests. Effective soil density is a term used to consider the fraction of pore water that moves with the solid skeleton during shear wave propagation.

An Automatic Feedback System for Resonant Column Testing

Geotechnical Testing Journal, 1990
Abstract A test method and electronic circuitry is described that greatly simplifies measurement of resonant frequency in the resonant column test. It utilizes a feedback system to detect resonance automatically without requiring manual adjustment and also eliminates the need for a sine wave audio oscillator or oscilloscope.

Evaluation of Dynamic Properties of Sands by Resonant Column Testing

Geotechnical Testing Journal, 1984
Abstract Torsional resonant column tests were performed on Monterey No. 0 sand of 60% relative density under confining pressures ranging from 10 to 300 kPa to evaluate the dynamic properties of the sand. Both solid and hollow cylindrical specimens were used in testing, and shear moduli and damping ratios were determined for cyclic shear ...
