Emerging pathogenic strongylid infections in Virunga Massif mountain gorillas: Role of environmental stressors

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 63, Issue 1, January 2026.
These findings highlight an emerging health threat for mountain gorillas, with implications for other isolated wildlife populations facing similar ecological and evolutionary pressures. The study calls for continued monitoring of parasitic diseases in wildlife populations, especially those in fragmented habitats with limited capacity for expansion, to ...

Productivity‐dependent effects of adapted mowing regimes on arthropod communities in roadside grasslands

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 63, Issue 1, January 2026.
Adjusted mowing dates and, in productive grasslands, an increased mowing frequency may benefit grassland arthropod communities under current environmental conditions. Abstract Arthropod diversity is rapidly declining in semi‐natural grasslands. Among the driving factors are nitrogen deposition and climate change, which typically increase vegetation ...

HiMBar: A High‐Fidelity Metagenomic Barcoding Approach for Transkingdom Species Detection and Interaction Analysis in Aquatic Ecosystems

open access: yesMolecular Ecology Resources, Volume 26, Issue 1, January 2026.
ABSTRACT Aquatic ecosystems host diverse organisms across all six life kingdoms, yet their complex interactions remain poorly understood, primarily due to limitations in transkingdom species detection methods. To address this limitation, we developed HiMBar (https://github.com/Xchenkai2019/HIFI_barcoding), a high‐fidelity (HiFi) metagenomic barcoding ...

How Management Practices Shape the “Local Habitat Signature” That Modulates Bird Communities in Urban Green Spaces

open access: yesBiotropica, Volume 58, Issue 1, January 2026.
Local scale factors, not just the broad urban gradient, are the key drivers of urban bird communities. Our multi‐scale study found that specific management practices, such as managing leaf litter depth or the presence of unmanaged tall grass, explained the largest portion of variation in bird composition.

Plant Identity Impacts the Soil Microbiome More Than Interspecific Interactions in Intensively Managed Grasslands

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Soil Science, Volume 77, Issue 1, January–February 2026.
The impact of plant identity and interspecific interactions on the soil microbiome in intensively managaged grasslands. ABSTRACT Plants and soil microbes are intricately linked, and agricultural production relies heavily on microbially mediated ecosystem services. However, the effects of plant diversity (richness, relative abundance and composition) on
