Ecological speciation with gene flow followed initial large‐scale geographic speciation in the enigmatic afroalpine giant senecios (Dendrosenecio)

open access: yesNew Phytologist, Volume 246, Issue 5, Page 2307-2323, June 2025.
Summary Mountains have highly heterogeneous environments that generate ample opportunities for lineage differentiation through ecological adaptation, geographic isolation and secondary contact. The geographic and ecological isolation of the afroalpine vegetation fragments on the East African mountain tops makes them an excellent system to study ...

Strong scale‐dependent relationships between fine‐root function and soil properties uncovered with spatially coupled sampling

open access: yesNew Phytologist, Volume 246, Issue 6, Page 2506-2521, June 2025.
Summary Substantial fine‐root trait variation is found at fine spatial scales but rarely linked to edaphic variation. We assessed the spatial scales of variation in fine‐root traits and adjacent soils using a spatially coupled, nested sampling scheme along a fertility gradient in a seasonally dry tropical forest tree, Handroanthus ochraceus.

Plant‐based and sustainable diet: A systematic review of its impact on obesity

open access: yesObesity Reviews, Volume 26, Issue 6, June 2025.
Summary The food system significantly affects the environment through land use, emissions from livestock, deforestation, and food waste. Diet sustainability considers the environmental effects of food production, distribution, and consumption. Animal products emit more greenhouse gases than plant‐based foods, prompting a shift towards plant‐focused ...

Prevalence of overweight and obesity in incarcerated individuals in developed and developing countries: A systematic review and meta‐analysis

open access: yesObesity Reviews, Volume 26, Issue 6, June 2025.
Summary We systematically assessed evidence of overweight and obesity prevalence, and possible determinants, in people who experience incarceration globally. We searched Embase, Medline, and Cochrane databases. Overweight and obesity proportions were pooled into a meta‐analysis and compared with national prevalences.

Hailstorm Events Over a Maritime Tropical Region: Storm Environments and Characteristics

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, Volume 130, Issue 10, 28 May 2025.
Abstract In recent years, the Maritime Tropics (mT) have reported an increase in hail events, including five occurrences over Surabaya, Indonesia. Past studies of mT hailstorms have been limited to individual case studies. A more comprehensive study is needed to improve understanding of hailstorms in this region, and may also provide new insights into ...
