Randomized preclinical study of machine perfusion in vascularized composite allografts

open access: yesBJS (British Journal of Surgery), EarlyView., 2020
This study was designed to identify the optimum machine perfusion parameters for preservation of limbs before transplantation, and determine whether this was better than cold storage. Normothermic machine perfusion at a pressure of 70 mmHg (NMP‐70) provided superior preservation to cold storage after transplantation.

Acid–base balance, serum electrolytes, and need for noninvasive ventilation in patients with hypercapnic acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

open access: yesEgyptian Journal of Chest Disease and Tuberculosis, 2018
Context Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a common disease with major morbidity and mortality. Hypoventilation occurring with hypercapnia of acute exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AECOPD) worsens respiratory acidosis ...

Is It the pH That Matters? Challenging the Pathophysiology of Acidemia in a Case of Severe Hypercapnia Secondary to Intraoperative CO2 Insufflation

open access: yesCase Reports in Critical Care, 2020
Background. Acidemia has been long thought to lead to hemodynamic compromise. While some literature to date challenges this idea, there is no consensus on this topic. Case Summary.

Changes of Acid-Base Variables in Dairy Cows with Chronically Implanted Fetal and Maternal Catheters during Late Gestation and Calving

open access: yesAnimals, 2022
The objective of the present study was to evaluate the changes in maternal and fetal arterial acid-base variables withdrawn from catheterized dams and fetuses during the last days before and during calving.

Successful noninvasive ventilation in a severely acidotic and hypercapnic comatose COVID-19 patient with multiple comorbidities: a case report [PDF]

open access: yesAcute and Critical Care, 2022
Effective use of noninvasive ventilation in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is well-known. However, noninvasive ventilation in patients presenting with altered sensorium and severe acidosis (pH

Acidosis activates complement system in vitro

open access: yesMediators of Inflammation, 1998
We investigated the in vitro effect of different form s of acidosis (pH 7.0) on the formation of anaphylatoxins C3a and C5a. Metabolic acidosis due to addition of hydrochloric acid (10 μ mol/ml blood) or lactic acid (5.5 μ mol/ml) to heparin blood (N=12)

Sodium bicarbonate buffer for weaning from venovenous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation in patients with hypercapnic respiratory failure and acute renal failure

open access: yesAnnals of Thoracic Medicine, 2022
Although the routine use of alkali buffer is not recommended in patients with respiratory acidosis, some patients may benefit from its administration.

Atropine use may lead to post-operative respiratory acidosis in neonates receiving ductal ligation: A retrospective cohort study

open access: yesPediatrics and Neonatology, 2018
Background: Patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) is one of the most common cardiac conditions in preterm infants. Closure of the PDA in symptomatic patients can be achieved medically or surgically.

Role of acute respiratory diseases in pathogenesis of distal limb infections in cattle

open access: yesВетеринария сегодня, 2021
According to current concepts, ruminal and metabolic acidosis occur due to feeding cattle mainly with preserved acidic feeds such as silage and haylage. However, errors in feeding are not the only etiological factor leading to acidosis.
