ばね鋼における残留オーステナイトの機械的, 熱的挙動を調査した。 従来ばねにおける残留オーステナイトは, 焼戻し過程で分解してしまうため特に注目されていなかったが, 耐へたり性向上のための高Si化及び高強度化のための焼戻し温度の低下により, 使用状態でも残留オーステナイトは残存しうる。残留オーステナイトは, 加工誘起変態によりマルテンサイト化することが知られているが, 本実験において衝撃破壊やショットピーニングにより変態が進行することが確かめられた。
