Disulfide Glass: An Optical Polymer for Commodity Plastics, Precision Optics, and Photonics

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
From oil and glass refining to high performance commodity polymers with enhanced thermomechanical and optical properties—the synthesis of a new high refractive index, highly transparent optical thermoset polymer is reported, termed, disulfide glass that affords a robust optical glass amenable to fabrication of precision optics and thin film photonic ...

Formation and enterohepatic circulation of metabolites ofc retinol and retinoic acid in bile duct-cannulated rats

open access: yesJournal of Lipid Research, 1966
Four hours after intraportal injection of retinoic acid-14C into bile duct-cannulated rats, less than 10% of the radioactivity was recovered in the liver, intestine, and kidneys. Within 6 hr, 40% of the radioactivity had appeared in bile.

Differential Expression of the Demosponge (Suberites domuncula) Carotenoid Oxygenases in Response to Light: Protection Mechanism Against the Self-Produced Toxic Protein (Suberitine)

open access: yesMarine Drugs, 2012
The demosponge Suberites domuncula has been described to contain high levels of a proteinaceous toxin, Suberitine, that displays haemolytic activityIn the present study this 7–8 kDa polypeptide has been isolated and was shown to exhibit also cytotoxic ...

Epigenetics and cell death: DNA hypermethylation in programmed retinal cell death. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
BackgroundVertebrate genomes undergo epigenetic reprogramming during development and disease. Emerging evidence suggests that DNA methylation plays a key role in cell fate determination in the retina.

Laser Photocoagulation for Retinal Detachments and Retinal Tears in Cytomegalovirus Retinitis

open access: yesOphthalmology, 1997
Retinal detachment complicates the course of cytomegalovirus (CMV) retinitis in nearly 30% of human immunodeficiency virus-infected patients. The study goal was to evaluate laser photocoagulation in the treatment of CMV retinitis-related retinal detachments and retinal tears.Nonrandomized, observational cohort study.Sixty-three patients with CMV ...

Automatic segmentation of nine retinal layer boundaries in OCT images of non-exudative AMD patients using deep learning and graph search.

open access: yesBiomedical Optics Express, 2017
We present a novel framework combining convolutional neural networks (CNN) and graph search methods (termed as CNN-GS) for the automatic segmentation of nine layer boundaries on retinal optical coherence tomography (OCT) images.

Carbon Nanotube 3D Integrated Circuits: From Design to Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
As Moore's law approaches its physical limits, carbon nanotube (CNT) 3D integrated circuits (ICs) emerge as a promising alternative due to the miniaturization, high mobility, and low power consumption. CNT 3D ICs in optoelectronics, memory, and monolithic ICs are reviewed while addressing challenges in fabrication, design, and integration.

Guidelines for the Management of Retinal Vein Occlusion by the European Society of Retina Specialists (EURETINA)

open access: yesOphthalmologica, 2019
The high prevalence of cardiovascular disease particularly in the elderly population is associated with retinal vascular disease. Retinal vein occlusions represent severe disturbances of the hypoxia-sensitive neurosensory retina.

A Homeostatic Photonic Device Integrating Vapor‐Regulated Thermo‐Optical Feedback Mechanisms

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
An inorganic homeostatic photonic device is designed to autonomously regulate light, temperature, and vapor sorption through integrated positive and negative feedback mechanisms at multiple wavelengths. The device uses a graded mesoporous 1D photonic crystal coupled with a photothermal layer.

Carotenoid Biosynthesis in Fusarium

open access: yesJournal of Fungi, 2017
Many fungi of the genus Fusarium stand out for the complexity of their secondary metabolism. Individual species may differ in their metabolic capacities, but they usually share the ability to synthesize carotenoids, a family of hydrophobic terpenoid ...
