Vasohibin-1 and Retinal Pigment Epithelium
2011Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is one of the main factors for inducing choroidal neovascularization in patients with age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) is one of the main sources for expressing VEGF. Vasohibin-1 is a VEGF-inducible gene in human cultured endothelial cells with antiangiogenic properties ...

Adenocarcinoma of the Retinal Pigment Epithelium
Archives of Ophthalmology, 1978A 57-year-old woman complaining of decreased vision for six months had a mass expanding the choroid inferonasally in the right eye. Clinical examination, ultrasonography, and fluorescein angiography were consistent with a malignant melanoma. The eye was enucleated and pathologic studies showed an adenocarcinoma of the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE ...

Renaissance of the Retinal Pigment Epithelium
Archives of Ophthalmology, 1972THE APPLICATION of recent advances in laboratory methods to the study of individual intraocular structures has greatly enhanced our ability to evaluate their function in health and disease. Nowhere is this more apparent than in the investigation of the retinal pigment epithelium where the utilization of light and electron microscopy coupled with ...

The Retinal Pigment Epithelium
Archives of Ophthalmology, 1968A quantitative analysis of the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) was accomplished by examining ten eyes obtained postmortem from eight individuals between the ages of four months of gestation and 96 years. The RPE was found to consist of a dynamic population of cells which change in number and dimensions as a function of age and location in the eye. The

Regeneration of Mammalian Retinal Pigment Epithelium
1994Publisher Summary This chapter focuses on the Regeneration of mammalian retinal pigment epithelium (RPE). By regeneration it mean the replacement of the damaged RPE sheet by a new one, involving cell proliferation and migration to produce new cells that differentiate into epithelium with the structural and functional characteristics of normal RPE ...

[Retinal pigment epithelium--desferal].
Bulletin de la Societe belge d'ophtalmologie, 2007Deferoxamine mesylate (Desferal) is a chelating agent used in hemosiderosis and aluminium overload consecutive to renal dialysis. This drug is the most efficacious for treating iron overload but is associated with ocular toxicity: dose and duration related symptomatic optic neuropathy on the one hand, reversible if treatment stopped, and acute retinal ...

Culturing of Retinal Pigment Epithelium Cells
2009The retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) is a monolayer of cells adjacent to the photoreceptors of the retina. It plays a crucial role in maintaining photoreceptor health and survival. Degeneration or dysfunction of the RPE can lead to photoreceptor degeneration and as a consequence to visual impairment.

Hamartoma of the Retinal Pigment Epithelium
American Journal of Ophthalmology, 1976A 9-year-old boy had a unilateral ocular lesion characterized by a broadly elevated mass at the level of the retinal pigment epithelium. The mass showed hyperpigmented borders, overlying retinal constracture, retinal vessel tortuosity, and vitreous condensations. Electrophysiologic testing revealed an abnormal electrooculogram.
